Bringing Things Up to Date —March 9, 2017
Looks like I haven't been keeping things updated lately. Time to fix that.
So, I cut Mangara of Corondor. It felt a little too clunky as a removal spell, and I couldn't consistently get a sac outlet to keep it from exiling itself. Krosan Restorer is also gone because it didn't feel like it did a whole lot. Lastly, Akroma's Vengeance has left the board. I always considered it a placeholder board wipe; it's fairly expensive, but at least it cycles if I don't need it.
The first new addition is Tragic Arrogance. I always wanted to try it in this deck ever since it released, but I only wanted to use it when I got a foil, since my Akroma's Vengeance was strictly more pimp. Now that I have a prerelease foil, I could make the swap. So far, it's been doing fine work, but I feel like its time in the deck will be relatively short-lived now that Damnation is being reprinted. Hopefully now I can get a foil for a reasonable price, but I'll still use it even if I can only afford a nonfoil because it can be tutored with Dimir House Guard.
The second and third additions go together. Since Mangara and Krosan Restorer were both cuts, I figured the best replacements would be other three-drop creatures. I considered adding back in Yavimaya Granger (and am considering it again now that I found a foil), but I settled upon Harmonic Sliver and Necrotic Sliver. Both serve purposes as removal, and both support each other, which I felt makes them better than the sum of their parts. I just recently traded for a foil Necrotic Sliver, which is why I'm doing this update.
Karmic Guide is finally foiled out. Thankfully, EMA foils aren't too expensive to trade for, and the newer art is comparable to the original. Also, I swapped out the DTK foil Evolving Wilds for the FNM promo again. The FNM promo's art grew on me.
