Clearly I have some issue revolving around preconstructed decks; not so much my collecting precons as they release as shown in my collection of Duel Decks, Planeswalker Decks, Commander Decks, and a few others... but my fairly recent obsession with building from singles the deck lists of past precons one way or another. I think I'm feeling some kind of TCG based midlife crisis, which is probably somewhat healthier than if I decided to dump my family, buy a motorcycle, and travel the US highway system to find myself.
To confront and put some boundaries on it, I've decided to make a goal. I am putting together a deck from each block release, up to Shadows over Innistrad block. Certain sections of release will have different self imposed rules based on vibes essentially. Some choices are based on cost, as I don't feel like investing a bout load into a couple singles just to play out a deck that is likely going to stay as is to play casually. Some are based on nostalgia. Others, input from people who know me.
So this is the first of the "Never Owned" Theme decks, and partially the reason I wanted to hit decks I didn't own in an era where I did have more purchasing power. I had bought every Ravnica Block Theme deck with the exception of Dimir Intrigues because I just couldn't find a copy. Additionally, this particular deck looks pretty solid for it's theme and decently priced as opposed to the other options I considered. My first for example was Golgari Deathcreep, but the total ended up kinda pricey. One that has some Nostalgia attached would be Code of the Orzhov because my first Prerelease event was Guildpact and I built Orzhov... but I had reservations.
In the end, completing the collection in a weird way, and having an indirect and controlling deck strategy feels very satisfying.
