the new core engine is popping offffffffffffffffff —June 1, 2021
Turns out the tapdown engine works really well with everything the deck was already doing! After doing a few changes here and there I can confidently say that Verity Circle is as good as I'd hoped, and that Jolting Merfolk has somehow become one of my favorite cards to have at any time. Instant speed targeting. +4 with Verity Circle to help draw into control. Utility vs. things that want to tap or attack for value. Puts itself back into the graveyard during upkeep to be reanimated further, leading to what's often either a 2 mana or even free +4. It's REALLY GOOD.
I'm just overjoyed at the results tbh. It feels like finally I'm able to interact the amount that I want to. The amount I should be able to at high power tables. There is hardly any doubt as to the strength of the deck's synergies any more, or the balance of effects like discard, reanimation, targeting, and control. Everything just works together really nicely in a way that's unique enough to appease my own warped high standards. I'll keep looking out for new cards to include in this list that work well with the current gameplan, and maybe someday another card like Cowardice will come along and propel things to even greater heights.
Til then, I'm gonna be considering MH2 cards for inclusion. Obvious one is Damn which I've already been testing in place of Swiftfoot Boots, and another is the obnoxiously good Dauthi Voidwalker. They'd be oppressively strong with Sun Titan bringing them back every turn, but weirdly enough I'm not fond of trying to slot the titan back in. A large portion of the time, they were too expensive to cast, and without a decent bit of setup, just never had anything other than lands to bring back. It's a bit strange, how the development of this deck has gone -- Sun Titan had been a core part of the deck since the beginning, and I placed a massive emphasis on sub-4 CMC permanents so him and Zur the Enchanter *f-etch* could do their best work together, but I think that for the targeting strategy, in order for him to support it, I'd have to play weird stuff like Seal of Removal which just didn't end up working very well, especially with the shift to the need for instants with Rhystic Study and Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur. Strange development indeed, but this current iteration has highly flexible pieces and synergies all across the board and I wouldn't have it any other way.
