Fungus among us — RANDOM UPDATE 2

Gods of Theros have forsaken us...
There was zero "Thelonesque" cards and thallids are sad.

Anyway, since this thing already resembles a blog, I decided to scribble something about different mechanics and synergies between cards of the deck. I know these cards are terrible but I just can't but love it when weird janky cards work together!

Power through Death

Like for any self-respecting Green/Black deck, your graveyard is not only a heap of trash but a source of great power.

The most notable mechanic in the deck is "Spore Counter", which is used by many fungus creatures. Thelon of Havenwood plays the part of a fungus lord that gives your fungus creatures boost equal to the number of spore counters in them. Thallids accumulate spore counters slowly by themselves but Thelon can speed things up by turning dead fungi into spore counters!

Drown in Filth might seem underwhelming at first glance but it actually has great synergies with other cards in the deck. Not only does it kill a creature, it can also put fungus creatures directly into your graveyard, from where you can turn them into spore counters with Thelon!

Drown in Filth also does wonders with Worm Harvest, because they make eachother stronger. By retracing the Harvest, you get more lands to your graveyard and that increases the effect of the Drowning. By casting Drown you can get land cards into your graveyard, which brings even larger clusters of squirming worms!.

Deck has plenty of lands that can end up to your graveyard by one way or the other. Couple of fetch lands give your manabase color fixing and cycling lands like Barren Moor can draw you cards. The two spells mentioned above should give you a hint about the purpose of these cards.

Symbiotic Relationships

In some rare occasions, few very lackluster cards can actually form great teams!

Deck has a fun single creature lock in form of Mindbender Spores and Sporogenesis. By happenstance both cards use same kind of Fungus Counters. In normal circumstances a creature blocked by Spores would stay tapped for four rounds but if you have Sporogenesis, you can keep it tapped as long as you put new fungus counters on it during your upkeep.

Ever wondered how to make your Fungusaur grow without getting it killed? Your answer lies in Thorn Thallid! With enough spore counters this thorny toadstool can safely injure your lizard and make it grow larger and larger. Your enemies will learn to fear this horrible spiky fungi when they get afflicted by Mire Blight and suddenly your thallid turns into a deadly Sniper of the Forests!

Uncontrollable Growth

When your summonings just are not growing fast enough, you might want to use some utility spells.

Not every fungus in the deck generates spores, but that can be fixed with Fungal Bloom. Even if a creature has no abilities that benefit from added spore counters, it will still get boost to power and toughness from Thelon. Spores for everyone!

One of the best creatures in the deck is Corpsejack Menace. Corpsejack is a major threat as it makes your oozes and slimes grow faster and can create enormous devour creatures. There are eight creatures that gain +1/+1 counters by one way or the other, not to even mention Oran-Rief, the Vastwood!

Two spells from the deck with biggest effects are propably Spread the Sickness and Grim Affliction. The amount of different counters that can be proliferated is just staggering, there are 30 different cards that utilize counters in some form!

PS. Foiling process is currently at 48.72%.

"Thallids could absorb energy from the forest itself.
Even elves were at a disadvantage in fighting them."

Door of Destinies sure is pretty good card for token decks but I'm trying to keep amount of artifacts in the deck at minimum (since they are not natural and don't fit the theme well). Only reason I still have Druidic Satchel is because Thelon is Creature - Elf Druid. :)

Other updates: Decided to give Worm Harvest another chance, mostly because I just saw new november FNM promo of Grisly Salvage which has just incredible art and might get a spot in the deck later on. Both G. Salvage and Drown in Filth put cards in the graveyard and that is something that can benefit both Thelon of Havenwood and Worm Harvest . Also, cycling lands; card draw AND worm food in one healthy lump of dirt!
