Update 2 - Disregard - Failed —Jan. 15, 2019

Future changes inbound, a new team will be working on the upkeep of this primer. Stay tuned for what they are!

EDIT (August 16th, 2020) - Disregard this, things came up, however I will now update this solely - SynergyBuild!

Ah, that list! Yeah, I have a $40 version I have like of to give out/teach to new players instead of a precon because we have a pretty cutthroat meta.

It wrecks face for $40 in comparison to every other deck I have ever heard of players making on that budget.

At every cost, I find hermit druid to be one of if not the best possible deck.

Would you be willing to send me a link to it? I've been looking for a list to recommend to newer players over the pre-con

Oh, $40 Hermit Druid is the list. Also, I am back in town, and the house is okay except for a small tree hitting it. No major damage, no leakage, and all of the stuff is fine!

The land base formula falls apart for tier 1 decks, as it comes to impossibly low numbers. For instance, I'm on Thrasios and Vial Smasher storm, and the equation says to run 25 lands, however 28 is actually optimal here. Otherwise, this is pretty good and thorough.

Penthoplayer, again, this isn't for cEDH decks, and it was noted that Why Every Commander is Competitive is the general primer for it. That is a mana hungry deck, and 28 lands actually isn't entirely correct for Thrasios + Vial/Tymna Storm lists. 27 has been found more consistent, using the proper rocks and lands like Gemstone Caverns, Ancient Tomb, and other fast mana accelerants.

Otherwise, yes, the formula isn't perfect, I don't think there is one that isn't too complex to list here. Apologies for any inconvenience in that.

No, it's not a problem. I'm impressed overall. And the 28 lands is just what happens to work best for me, and I do have all the best lands and rocks for the deck already.

Another great resource that I will put in Suns_Champion's Well of Ideas!

I'd like to make a suggestion for the recommended Boros commanders. Drop two of Aurelia, the Warleader. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, or Iroas, God of Victory for:

Brion Stoutarm and Firesong and Sunspeaker.

My reasoning being that Boros has always been the color of attackattackattack and your list of commanders just helps that narrative and ignores(in my opinion) the two most interesting Boros commanders. Brion is all about sacking big creatures, not necessarily attacking, and Fire&Sun are about casting huge damage spells and gaining tons of life. Adding these two would round out the Boros lineup and give people a better idea of all the colors can do for them. Like this:

  1. flippy protection/boardwips goodstuff angel

  2. sacking big creature shenanigans + lifegain

  3. attackattackattackattack FOR THE LEGION

  4. big long-named lifelinked damage spells/sunforger control

And look, I might be a little biased, as I run both these commanders, but I like to think myself as a Boros.. Expert?.. so that's why I think you could make the swap. Anyway, love the list! Keep up the great work!

Suns_Champion I'd say Iroas and Aurelia. Gisela can double as a direct damage commander.

I'll consider Stoutarm, but I'll pass on Firesong/Sunspeaker. It just isn't a commander I think has a reasonably large enough presence to include. Iroas can be dropped for Brion though, he uses the Red steal effects as removal, sacrificing them before they return at the end of turn.

Gisela can be a prison deck, with interesting synergies unlike any other deck, and AUrelia is a top tier combo-stax deck, with Helm of the Host. Iroas is just a Swing-Out aggro list, so it can be dropped.
