Today, TappedOut community, I issue the first of hopefully many challenges to you. Your aim? To create a Legacy-legal deck based on a mad theme of my own design.
The rules for this first competition are these:
-
Your deck must be Legacy-legal. That is, no more of 4x each card that is not a basic land, and stick to the Legacy-legal list of cards; no Black Lotus.
-
Your deck must be essentially mono-blue. My definition for this is somewhat different from the rules'. Specifically, if you want to use a hybrid-casting cost card, that's fine, so long as a- At least one of the hybrid mana symbols is blue, no Beseech the Queen, and b- I can cast it using nothing but blue mana. Otherwise, stick to pure mono-blue cards, or face disqualification.
-
Your deck must be an aggro deck. That is, it must aim to win primarily by quick, fast damage, primarily inflicted by small creatures and supplemented by direct damage if necessary.
You can throw together your decklists and e-mail them to me at [email protected]. You can also build them right here on TappedOut and leave a note on my wall linking me to it. I will examine all entries, and issue a Top 10 list of winners based on the following criteria:
-
Creativity - Did you find unexpected and unusual cards or come up with a very original overall idea?
-
Effectiveness - Does your deck have a decent chance to win a duel?
-
Theme adhesion - Did your deck stick to the stated theme? If not, massive penalty.
So go forth, TappedOuters, and bring to me a suitable mono-blue aggro deck. To get you started, here's what I would have built:
- 4x Unstable Mutation
- 2x Sunken City
- 4x Merfolk of the Pearl Trident
- 4x Thalakos Seer
- 4x Psionic Blast
- 4x Unsummon
- 4x Phantom Warrior
- 4x Drifter il-Dal
- 2x Familiar's Ruse
- 22x Island
- 4x Genju of the Falls
- 2x Energy Vortex
You now have until Wednesday, December 16th, to submit your deck. Entries close at midnight that evening.

are colorless mana costing spells against the rules?
December 10, 2009 10:51 p.m.
KrazyCaley says... #6
Good question. A few colorless spells won't DQ you if they fit in well with the theme. Feel free to add in a couple if they jibe well with your idea. As long as I can cast it with blue mana, that's fine.
But don't go overboard and build an artifact aggro deck or anything. The deck should primarily be "blue" in flavor.

Blue faeries for the WIN: Faerie Mindbomber :)
Can't wait to see the top 10.

Ah, sadly i'm leaning more Standard right now. Legacy im totally out of touch with (mind wiped.. gov't employee).. magic took the back seat for a few years soooo.. I'll wait for a standard one, or try my hand next time.. we'll see.

Merfolk honestly is probably cheating. They're extremely fast and a proven archetype in Legacy and past Standard events.
My vote is for more Psionic Blast
December 11, 2009 3:24 p.m.
are you leaning more towards theme or actual winning matches----because merfolk decks with counterspells rule this format....Cursecatcher IMO..
i dont have many older cards but if we play Legacy/extended i usually just get handed a deck---and Merfolk is pretty much my favorite....
it surely wouldnt be original though...?
December 11, 2009 4:26 p.m.
Blue Bounce Aggro is ready to go, i'll add a sideboard in if you think i should, this is extremely fun to play as well

The criteria are posted above, Bensoj. You get points for creativity, effectiveness, and theme cohesion. Merfolk aggro decks probably aren't the most original, but they are effective.

Here's another, wackier decklist that I threw together yesterday. I'm not sure if it quite fits the theme, but I had so much fun making it that I had to share: Atlantean Double-Mindbender :-D

Hello there. Your article convinced me to finally finish off my aggro/illusion deck I've had kicking around.
Anyway, here's my submission, hope you like it. You're all Illusions
