Nameless Tokens and Named Tokens - How to tell the difference?

Asked by UniqueUserID 7 years ago

Basically I recently made a deck around Spy Kit and Echoing Truth, however it seems I might of made a fundamental mistake.

My idea was to use cards such as Master Splicer and Blade Splicer to make nameless tokens, but someone suggested that these tokens are named "GOLEM". So when I bounce all the creatures these too would be returned/killed.

So my question is this, how do I know if a token has a name?

Is it as simple as the oracle text states it has a name? Such as this list here:http://magiccards.info/query?q=o%3Acreature+o%3Atoken+o%3Anamed&v=card&s=cname

Or does all tokens ALSO have a name? Such as these official printed ones?http://mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Token/Full_List

Unless specifically stated on the card (ie Dark Depths), the tokens created will have names the same as their creature type. So if you Echoing Courage a Golem token, all your golem tokens will be affected.

Note that once created, the token's name will not change if its creature type changes. Likewise, its creature type will stay the same if its name changes.

Cool, one more question.

Will using Echoing Truth on a Spy Kitted Blade Splicer WON'T bounce the golem token? Does Spy Kit even give names that are creature types/token names?

Correct, they won't be bounced. Reason from Spy Kit's gatherer;

8/23/2016 The set of names the equipped creature has includes the names of all nonlegendary creature cards in the Oracle card reference, including the back faces of double-faced cards. Notably, the equipped creature wont gain the names of tokens, such as Zombie, Goblin, and similar. It also wont gain the names of noncreature cards that have become creatures, such as a Wandering Fumarole that has become a creature.

This is because tokens aren't cards. Spy Kit only gives the names of creature cards to the equipped creature. I wanted to spell it out explicitly because it can come up in other contexts.

As the others have said, all tokens have names, but generally the name is just the type unless the effect creating the token specifies a different name or the token was created as copy of something with a specific name.

To my knowledge the only way to get a nameless creature is to involve this guy (which means playing with silver bordered cards).

nobu_the_bard Face-down creatures are also nameless, so you can't Ixidron then Echoing Truth to bounce everything. This does allow nameless tokens by Fated Infatuationing a face-down, but in general, tokens will have names.
