Wanted: New Playtester Feedback

TappedOut forum

Pull up any deck you like and throw playtest/ onto the end of the URL then come here and type feedback. =)

Update: All issues I mentioned seem to have been completely resolved - YOU GUYS RULE! Also, I'm happy to report zero issues so far running across browsers (Chrome, Lightning, Krypton, Firefox) on Android 5.1, and no further issues on XP machine across Firefox and Chrome.

Hey, this has been really shaping recently, thank you for the work on this.

I've noticed that the shuffling still seems off. I'll regularly see clusters of 2-3 copies of the same cards in the library list, multiple clusters per game. Obviously this is still possible in a random shuffle, but it comes up too frequently to comfortably assign to chance.

This is the first play tester I've enjoyed using on my phone! Which is awesome. With that said a couple minor quality of life tweaks would be great:

tapping on instants/sorceries in your hand should (imo) move them to the graveyard instead of the battlefield

when you view an individual card it'd be nice to have separate buttons for the "move to" bit that are immediately accessible rather than a drop down that must be held for a second on touch interfaces. Seems small but these moments add up.

Thanks!

Hey,I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but is there a reason why the banner at the bottom of the site is in the playtest2? I Imagine we can get significantly more field space of that was removed.

I am a little short on time, so I will try to keep this brief.

Cons of the new playtester:

A) It takes a very long time to play cards such as Boundless Realms because of the new "Draw by name" tab

B) When I have a ton of cards on a table, I find it quite easy to stack them and organize them for easier use, but I am afraid that this is not a very efficient way of doing so. When I place a card on the battlefield then move it, it wants to hover back to where it was originally. This is very angering when using a computer of any kind

I would add more, but those are my main points and I am kind of in a rush. TO THE DEVELOPERS: Please, please, please, please, please keep the old playtester somewhere. I really like the old one and would hate to see it disappear. Maybe make it the Playtest II or something. Also, I mean for this to be constructive criticism, not an insult

Playtester 1 is still available for all users Halphinian. Though I do agree that the draw by name tab not setting to the card you select so you can draw multiples of them by name is tedious. The same thing with tokens.

Halphinian says... #7

Femme_Fatale I am sorry for not saying so, I meant that I hope Playtest 1 would stick around in the future when Playtest II is completed

December 4, 2015 11:11 p.m.

One thing I noticed is that the playtester always makes 12 stacks of cards regardless of card size and screen space. It would be nice if reducing card size or zoom factor would allow to place more than those 12 stacks on the board.

Refreshing the page with F5 also restarts the game. That means changing settings during a game is not possible without aborting it.

The images are anchored by the upper left corner instead of the image's center (or so i think), that causes odd positioning behavior when handling stacks that include tapped cards. Or is that a "firefox only"-issue?

I don't know if that's possible since only LMB is used, but a method to move whole or partial stacks of cards at once (solitaire style) would be nice.

The "draw by name" function is a little bit inaccurate in that it requires putting the card into the hand and does not allow to put a card directly on the field or into the yard from the deck. not an important issue, but it kind of irks me every time.

I do like the ability to swap cards in from sideboard, but I would definitely enjoy having space for more than 2 rows of cards (I use 3 or 4 when I actually play).

I can't seem to get the playtester to even work. It won't even load without crashing, on chrome and firefox both.

January 8, 2016 4:15 a.m.

@ RubyRhapsody

It works just fine for me (firefox). Maybe something's wrong with your computer or connection if it crashes on both browsers. I'd suggest going over the usual troubleshooting methods like clearing your browser cache and such.

Generally, even the biggest computer genius would need more info than "it crashes" (what now, the playtester, the browser, the computer) to help. Details like your platform/OS/browser version and a precise description of the error are a minimum standard when reporting bugs.

P.S. Note that I personally will not be able to help you any more than google can.

Will the Playtester be updated for C15 experience Counters? Perhaps it would be easier to just add an experience counter "token" to the tester if it identifies one of those 5 Cards in your deck?

January 9, 2016 4:34 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #16

yeaGO, I made a "Copy" token through photoshop and linked it to Mirrorpool. I made it to use with cards like Rite of Replication and other token copy producers.

Now I was wondering if you would prefer this, or if you would like to implement a "copy card" feature similar to what is on untap.in. Basically the playtester would generate a token of any card that you press the hotkey on or click the button in the card's menu.

Are you planning on making use of this wasted space?

It's the only thing still keeping me from using the new playtester on my desktop. I've tried other browsers and settings to no avail... am I missing something?

Thanks for your work!

I am enjoying most of the new Playtester features, particularly the tokens.

One thing I am finding very frustrating is that if I hold down my finger on a card in my hand to check what it says, when I remove my finger the card bounces on to the field.

Is there anything that can be done so that the card stays in my hand? It used to in the old Playtester.

noticed that P/T changes in really weird ways when you put +1/+1 counters on creatures, then transformed them a couple times. Werewolves are like that for sure. They end up shrinking in P/T.

I've been using the new Playtester a lot lately and it seems to have one major flaw. Well at least it does for me.

It usually gives me one or nil lands on my first draw. When I restart the game after this I get a number of lands that I would expect.

Most of the decks I am testing have 24 or more lands, so that should mean I regularly see at least two in my opening hand.

The interface is too small even just for lands, if you don't play an aggro deck.

New issue Wednesday July 13th (Mac OSX/Chrome):

The new reorganized "Tutor Card" pull-down breaks after the first time you use it. The entire deck list is displayed in text in the menu bar, no further cards can be tutored beyond the first, and the screen gets stretched 1000 pixels in height as the list pushes everything downward. 100% broken and unusable.

Playtester v1 stopped accessing the current decklists and seems to be working on some kind of cached set of lists from last week or earlier. There was a period of time when you started introducing the new playtester that the old one became "slow" to catch list updates. Immediately after updating, only the new playtester would correctly load the new updated deck. After a half hour or so, the old playtester would then begin to correctly load the updated list, but now it seems stuck in groundhog day and does not correctly check and load the current list ever.

As of 1:21pm on Wednesday, both playtesters are now broken and unusable for me.

:(

thank you yeaGO for your time on this stuff, I use the playtesters almost every day when Im taking a break from work. They are invaluable to me. They improve my efficiency and ability to run games, test stuff, and practice by at least a factor of 10 compared to clearing off the coffee table and shuffling and dealing two decks of paper myself. I really appreciate the playtesters and the work that they require to maintain.

yea, v2 is working now!

this isn't a bug, but if you have time:

when you press spacebar and bring up the card's P/T/counters etc, in v1, the keyboard hotkeys G, X, Y, shiftY etc. all continued to work in this 'spacebar' focus on the card. In v2, these hotkeys no longer work when the spacebar 'focus on the card' window is brought up. Its particularly annoying when dealing with things like Tasigur or snapcaster.

In v1, you could open the list of whats in the yard, click a card and X, click a card and X, click a card and X, and you could move on. Now in V2, after you click the card in the yard, you have to move your cursor to the focus window, pull down the 'move to where' tab and select its destination. This is many many times less efficient.

Sometimes i find myself just putting the entire yard into my hand or onto the battlefield with hotkeys first now just so i don't have to click a million times.

Not a big deal, just wanted to keep the feedback coming.

I played a few hours this evening after dinner and here are first thoughts on the new build:

-The sideboard swaps part is awesome! Alot more intuitive and easy to use than the last build of v2.

-You accidentally labeled toughness as tokens in the green and red buttons that do board-wide P/T/counter modifiers on the right. Currently it says plus/minus "token".

-I don't know if its problematic to implement, but the log function in v1 was excellent and very useful. Definitely miss it very much.

-It would really be a huge improvement if the hand could ride down even further along the bottom of the browser tab as it does in v1. As it stands, vertical space is so limited that stacking lands on the battlefield is not only tedious, but quickly obscures the P/T of creatures in the non-land permanent row.

Thanks again yeaGO, I really appreciate the time you put into this!

Agreed on the wasted space, matching the play area real estate to V1 might finally win me over to using V2 exclusively.

Shortcut 'F' used to flip cards in v1. Why this feature was removed?

July 14, 2016 2:21 a.m.

xiao.wen says... #37

noticed this a bit ago but forgot to mention:

in v2, tarmogoyf seems to be set as having negative one power and positive one toughness, so that +1/+1 counters make him a 0/2, 1/3, 2/4 etc.

while i prefer this version of reality, more magic would be played and fun would be had if keeping track of goyfs P/T didnt require separate adjustments.

Pack Rat's token isn't displaying an image. I also noticed that in the description of the Rat token, next to the name it says ORI. It was one of my least favorite formats, but I played a ton of triple ORI draft and I can't remember anything that had an X/X rat token. Is it possible that an incorrect set location is causing it to look for an image that just isn't there?

xiao.wen says... #39

workaround idea for v2 layout cramping:

In addition to wasting space below where the hand is held, v2 no longer allows having the bottom of your lands hang off the board area at all, so arranging a pile of lands that descends from the first becomes difficult and tedious as there is precious little space to have many stacked at the same time. v2 encourages stacking, somewhat awkwardly, upwards from the first dropped land. A simple improvement would be moving the snap location for the first dropped land to be further down towards the limit of how low the land can approach the bottom of the playspace. This would allow v2's upward stacks better space for organization.

Additionally, I had a more radical idea that might just work in this v2 setup without you having to worry about the frame heights and locations (Im assuming that's the issue?). If the creatures and planeswalkers snapped to the upper RIGHT of the battlefield while the lands snapped to the lower left, it would be much easier to manage stacks of lands without obscuring P/T and counters. The two rows are fighting over vertical real estate now, and having them build from different sides would delay conflict until silly EDH stuff was happening.

The type-to-search tutor drop down tab is slower to use on mobile devices and doesn't provide any advantage to a keyboard where previously typing skipped you down to the relevant section of the list anyways. On mobile it's difficult to use the drop down list as the on screen keyboard covers most of it up, and typing the name and then tapping on it takes extra time compared to just scrolling down to touch the card I wanted. The typing box also seems to force the view to zoom in (at least on iPhone) such that you have to reset your view every time it's used. Overall much clunkier than your previous drop down, which worked very well. I'd appreciate a revert there, or at least an option to disable this. Thanks!

July 19, 2016 9:33 a.m.

Argy says... #41

The drop down tutor list is dreadful on an iPad as well.

Also, when you look at cards up close, the screen is so big that you have to scroll down to close it.

Clicking on the battlefield used to close that window, but it's now trickier to do that, too.

I don't use Version 2 because the Play Area is SMALL. And the "like" cards don't auto stack like Version 1.
