Rotation

Standard Deck Help forum

So with rotation just around the corner, I am curious if many of you attempt to make your old Standard deck work in the new environment or do you drop it and start fresh with a new brew? I am sure this depends on how hard your deck was hit by rotation, but I was just curious. For me personally, I will still brew around the new environment, but I will be trying to see if my Colossus deck can still be viable without Sanctum of Ugin and if it is still competitive.

I look forward to all your responses and Happy Brewing!

Currently running RDW will continue running it. Waiting to see if wotc keeps giving me solid replacement cards for what I'm loading. My deck:

I'm running a revolt deck right now that isn't hit too hard by rotation, as rotation comes there are some areas I need to address but I plan on keeping the deck.

Running black white lifegain, was hit pretty hard. Lost Gideon and a lot of removal, as well as thraben inspector. Most of the cards have okay replacements, only gideon is left as a blaring gap. I might work in a vampire tribal bit for the new 4 mana black one that drains when vampires attack, and the one that makes vamps when vamps attack. Vampires and ponies would be a fun combo

I've been playing with a cat-centric deck, but when Ixalan first became spoiled I started to really build around what I had seen. And now that spoilers have officially started, I've been revamping those decks so they that they'll hopefully be in good shape when rotation hits.

I usually do both. I'll brew some janky thing based on a new card that strikes me as cool, and I'll also update either an old Gruul or Izzet deck ... whichever seems like it'll be best in the new meta.

This time around, I'm not sure yet what I want to brew with, though I'm intrigued by Overflowing Insight + Wildfire Eternal. And I'm excited to run RG Pummeler again ... I think Game Trail is the only thing it's losing at all! :-)

I'm using the rotation as a way to jump back into magic after a long break. Thinking about a 4 color bolas control. Excited to see all the treasure cards.

clayperce that combo does seem sweet. All it needs is some unblockable effects and it would be insane. Not sure how +1+1 counters would fit in but Herald of Secret Streams would work.

Shane, perhaps you wanted some ramp? I can't really think of a good reason for green in Grixis control though. I'd keep an eye out for a Vraska Planewalker, which could potentially be sweet in a control shell. They just spoiled the Vraska exile instant that might be decent. Not sure about the 4 cmc though.

Qolorful I am with you, I think Merfolk look sweet so far. My one issue, as a deck brewer, with Tribal as it feels almost made for me if that makes sense. Similar to the Zombie deck, while a fine deck, it just seemed like someone said 'let's jam every rare zombie in standard into a deck and throw in some removal' and out pops a pro tour winning deck. Not to say there is something wrong with that, it just lacks that creative aspect for me. Interested to hear your thoughts though.

Overall it seems that many of the Kaladesh block decks are still pretty solid post rotation. Some, like Mardu Vehicles, lose some pretty substantial pieces but will still be solid decks I think.

I am of the camp that likes to brew janky stuff around cool cards but still tries to make old decks work.

With my Colossus deck, I plan on bringing in Herald of Anguish as another big threat and make it more of a controlling deck perhaps? I am still playtesting though so we shall see. I think big creatures were better in this current standard than they will be in Ixalan standard due to people packing more unconditional removal for Dinosaurs and whatnot. I also think that with the big dinos there could potentially be less Abrade meaning artifacts could be a good option. Either case I think it is an exciting period in Standard.

As far as tribal goes, I find the actual tribal part to be more or less irrelevant. The only tribal cards I'd use to make use of merfolk would be the new enchantment that makes tokens and Metallic Mimic probably. Other than that it would be more of a prowess deck without the prowess. Use the new simic legendary merfolk along with cards like wildfire Eternal and the new draw 7 card, and that green merfolk that gets real buff. That kind of stuff. I think it would be really fun to play. Though I'd obviously fine tune it more than that. It would be a prowess Aggro midrange that happened to take advantage of the natural protection and evasion the merfolk seem to have access too.

I generally brew a ton but try to improve the deck I'm currently playing. I didn't get to play during HoD or Amonkhet so I don't really have a deck other than Zombies which is about to die. I'm currently thinking of doing BW Vampires during XLN though.
