Phyrexians in Æther Revolt

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

I'm certain everyone in this forum already knows about the portal in Kaladesh that Tezzeret (who has a pseudo alliance with Elesh Norn) stole and is the lap dog of Nicol Bolas, who schemes n'shit.

There is just one piece of evidence that everyone overlooks. The Vedalkin in Kaladesh believe nothing is perfect, and drive for perfection anyway. The Phyrexians mission is Completion and Perfection. It is just thematically interesting (too much so to no not happen) for them to join the progress engine. Also Phyrexians being Urza's and Tolarian Academy's (O.G. justice league) enemy and Nicol Bolas being Ugin's, Sorin's, Nahiri's enmeis due to the Eldrazi and him having a personal vendetta against many of the Gate Watch (new justice league) such as Lili, Jace, Chandra more indirectly, and plenty of more Planeswalkers outside of the Oath will be the perfect two enemies to fight to complete the big 3 overarching villains of MTG.

I have serious doubts that they will suddenly introduce something so massive as a Phyrexian invasion in the second set of a block, especially because next up is a trip to Amonkhet. Tezzeret is in Kaladesh not to bring about the phyrexians, but to remind us that Bolas is out there and to transition nicely to Amonkhet, Bolas' world. Even though the full kaladesh story has yet to be released, the direction its going right now would make no sense if it randomly turned into phyrexian invasion. The story is about rebels vs Consulate, where it all leads up to the Inventor's Fair and Tezzeret does some crazy authoritarian shit (ex. Confiscation Coup) and the people revolt. I have serious doubts that 'Aether Revolt' means 'this new plane that we just introduced is now phyrexified'.

pumpkinwavy I don't believe it either, I was just pointing out uncited evidence to make speculations on it more credible despite my disbelief.

I don't think it's entirely out of the question.

However, because the next block is going to be so dramatic, I don't think the Phyrexian presence will be very large or overwhelming, if they do appear. What would happen instead, then, I don't know.

kanokarob IF they come, which I don't think will happen, I want them to show it on just one card, some draft chaff common, don't mention it, draw any attention to it, don't even have it have to do with the card, just sneak in a small amount of Glistening Oil on a thopters in the background, or a (Phi) symbol on in the background of a building, something so subtle and so hidden that it might not even get forum attention, so when they unleash the Perfection Engine they can call back to it, our warning. That'd be cool, won't happen, but it'd be cool.

That would be interesting, but that would mean they didn't, in fact, come. I'd rather they show it on just a few cards, a few front-line baby Phyrexians, with maybe one legendary, that get through the portal before it gets shut off, who then must be killed to prevent the phyresis of the plane.

I'm almost certain that this is not the case. Maro has said a couple of times that they want artifacts on this plane to be about technology rather than biology, and I doubt they'd immediately condemn another artifact plane to the phyrexians. Surely they want to keep some around.

I hope it's more Eldrazi so we can be 3-for-3 with Standard blocks. I like consistency.

IMO I believe that Bolas is sending Tezzeret to find ways to transport non spark personnel through the aether to another plane. (Mainly for the purpose of sending his amonkhet army to another plane to conquer it.)

I get this feeling more when I look at Paradoxical Outcome's flavor text.

Bolas would have sent Tezzeret to see how the phyrexians were able to get their armies to another plane as well and it's likely that Tezzeret is using the inventors to figure it out.

I think there may be some more easter eggs and dubious "sightings"of phyrexians on Kaladesh, and perhaps Phyrexia is scouting Kaladesh or something like that, but they will not be in the limelight this block. I hope during Amonkhet we can move away from the Jacetice league and move onto bigger and better things, such as Bolas and not just his puppets. Once there, we may see Phyrexians. It may even be in a "return to kaladesh/phyrexia block" when the rest of the Mirrodin resistance is utterly annihilated (if they aren't already).

Man, I'm just waiting for the giant Mirrodin-Planes walker vs Phytexia Mosh Pit block. That is going to happen, mark my word.

The title, Aether Revolt and it's set symbol in correlation with Spontaneous Artist's flavor text makes me think it's just people rebelling against the Consulate and overthrowing them. Also, I'm really hoping for more thopters.

I doubt that Phyrexia shall invade Kaladesh in this block, because the plane has only just been introduced, and WotC would not want it to be conquered by Phyrexia, so soon. However, Tezzeret's appearance, while obviously leading into Bolas being involved in the Amonkhet block, is very likely how Phyrexia shall be reintroduced into the story, as well, I imagine. I predict that the final story of the Kaladesh block shall make a brief mention of "glistening oil," to hint at a future appearance of Phyrexia.

Phyrexians in Aether revolt is probably unlikely, but Tezzeret with a teleportation device that would definitely work for the Phyrexians means they are back in play. My bet would be if we are going to see Phyrexia soon it would be in "Hour of Devestation", since that is pretty much how most people would describe the arrival of Phyrexia on their plane. The big question is where Tezzeret's allegiances lie right now, whether he is still 100% working for Bolas, or whether the Phyrexians have bought him out, or if he is on his own team again. If Tezzeret is not 100% working for Bolas I would expect Phyrexia to get to visit some other planes soon. If he is working for Bolas, then given Bolas' age and knowledge I doubt he would have any intentions of letting Phyrexia off Mirrodin, though it would make stealing a teleportation device a lot stranger. Unless of course it was all a ploy to set loose Marit Lage :P.

I don't think they would destroy a plane only one set after introducing it

Harashiohorn, I believe that Tezzeret is loyal only to himself; he is working with both Phyrexia and Bolas to further his own goals, and only for as long as doing so is useful to him.

Based on what little was gleamed from the Uncharted Realms recently, Tezzeret died, and Bolas bargained for his corpse, clearly to reanimate him. If Tezzeret isn't inherently loyal for that out of gratitude, he's loyal by the conditions of the magic that reanimated him. He won't be betraying Bolas.

kanokarob He was killed in one of the books of old (before Scars block, I think) so we didn't first glean it from that UR. Conveniently, his card from Mirrodin Besieged therefore backs up your argument pretty well.

So the recent lore article around Confiscation Coup seems to lend support to my theory.

Tezzeret wants Rashimi's invention seen in Paradoxical Outcome for himself. He seems to be giddy with the opportunity.

kanokarob, with whom did Bolas bargain? I was not aware that he was the type to bargain with anyone.

kanokarob says... #20

I believe the people of the village near/where Tezzeret died. It was less of a bargain and more of a "Hey, I'm a massive dragon, mind lending me that one-armed corpse?" I only explicitly said bargain because it was implied he just sorta asked for it.
