Containment priest in Death & Taxes

Containment Priest is an amazing card, and at a first glance i was super hyped over the card. The hype settled after i realised that Containment Priest shuts down AEther Vial.

Ive seen many Death & Taxes lists with Containment Priest in the sideboard and im wondering if its worth it. Do you side out AEther Vial for Containment Priest? Against reanimate, tin fins, show and till and other decks that cheat out creatures, is AEther Vial too slow anyways?

What are your impressions of Containment Priest in D&T sideboard? Is the play it sees just the excitement from a new card, or should i as an D&T player invest in a playset now before it gets any more expensive?

I'd snag it now. It's the best way for you to combat any Sneak & Show decks, dredge, reanimator etc. It's ok to give a little ground on your end when it will end up hurting them way more. I have 2 in the board of D&T and Maverick b/c it's such a versatile card and they have to have answers for it. If you're playing against manaless dredge they pretty much have lost.

I play D&T in Modern as well as French Commander. My take on this is it all depends on your local meta to decide if Containment Priest is worth running over AEther Vial. depending on the situation I would run it in my French Commander deck mainboarded with the vial included because out of your 100 cards the Vial is the only way you cheat out creatures and the priest is the only thing in your deck that'd shut it down from happening. But if we're talking modern? there's a different story because obviously you'll be running 4 Vials and 2,3, or 4 Priests depending on how badly your local meta calls for them so obviously your odds of drawing into the both of them are much higher. for my choice I would keep the Priests sideboard as a 2-3 of and I would put them in place of 2 vials if you only side in 2 and the third put in place of a creature because of the simple fact that you still want to see a vial no matter what game you're playing, Vials in a white deck is killer especially when your curve tops at 3-4. I really hope this helped!!

Sorry just realized the Priest isn't modern legal, either way even for legacy I'd run with the same suggestions

It will follow the same fate of Council's Judgment and settle at 10 bucks. Wait for it.

This is the only way (that fits the deck) to combat your wrost matchup - ELVESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Natural Order is a pain in the butt and this deals with a lot more than just that. 2 is plenty in the SB, 3 at most. The matchups where Priest is important, vial is not important.

Never side vial out. Side out unimportant creatures like Brimaz and Crusader vs Show and tell, etc.

Thanks. I will try to get 2-3 copies for my sideboard :).

On another note, i have the possibility to buy 2x Karakas for about $100 each. I already have one, so 2 more would make my mana base optimal. Is this a good deal long term, or is Karakas in some sort of spike right now?

Karakas at 100 is a good deal. And the downside from containment priest isn't too bad when you think about the match ups it comes into (reanimator, sneak and show, elves)

TCG mid for Karakas is 150. I say this is a sweet deal. Karakas has not really budged in the past year since I had them (maybe 20 bucks or so, but it is no Tabernacle). Karakas offer an alternative way to deal with show and tell and are good with Mangara and Thalia and Brimaz.

julianjmoss / Boza Forgot to mention, the 2 Karakas is in Italian.. Does this affect the price?

Usually, italian cards are the cheapest, for some god forsaken reason. You being from Europe, you get to use magiccardmarket. There are 2 italian karakas for 55 euro a piece or 60-something dollars (albeit in bad condition, but ask for scans).

Italian Legends cards are more popular because the set was printed more there than here so the English Legends cards are worth a bit more. It isn't a huge disparity in price but it does exist, so getting really good condition Karakas for $100 apiece, even in Italian, is a good deal.

Hell, I'd consider running it mainboard.

Containment Priest on the stack, vial in Flickerwisp, bounce their creature and say "cya nerd."

fluffybunnypants that interaction is certainly fun, but 2 mana + vial activation for something similar to Swords to Plowshares, that also shuts down your AEther Vial is not really mainboard material. When up against Reanimate, Elves, Show & Tell or similar decks i can see siding out slower creatures, or vial itself for Containment Priest because it shuts down their deck.

Containment Priest does stop aether vial, but slowing you down to shut out your opponent is definitely worth it! economically speaking, it is going to drop. a better comparison would be True-Name Nemesis, which was over 40 at one point

Containment Priest is insane as a sideboard or maybe even mainboard legcy card.

It helps out with the decks hardest matchups so yea i'd say it's worth it.

It's completely worth giving up a Vial activation to screw up Elves' game plan and shut down Sneak & Show.
