ALA/CON/ARB vs. M11/M11/M11.

Discuss.

squire1 says... #2

M11 is all the rage and a great set but not so fun in draft sometimes, synergy is not really there.

MDragoon423 says... #3

Uhhh... I would say M11 just because its the current sets that are going to be played so it might be good for the people of this site to be able to discuss card choices. It'll help them in real life tournaments and such. ALA/CON/ARB being a set that is going to rotate soon isn't really fresh in people's mind and doesn't help in tournaments anymore.

I would say to go just completely off and do sets that are really old so that the newer/standard players can get a feel for older cards and the older players can reminisce on old times. Unless the experience in your playgroup is severely skewed, it shouldn't affect too much.

MDragoon423 says... #4

Not sure why I wrote "I would say" twice, but I prefer my second option if that is at all possible (Since I am a relatively new player and pretty much strictly standard) it might be fun.

drizzy says... #5

I'd rather see m11/m11/m11 as I am more interested in seeing the stuff that is being played right now.

July 28, 2010 10:29 p.m.

I agree m11/m11/m11 fo' drizzle

ALARA AND WE SHOULD FORCE OURSELVES INTO DRAFTING JUND. but on a serious note alara seems more fun

m11. Draft blue rubbaducka!

July 29, 2010 3:47 a.m.

SocialistElite says... #9

ALARAAAAAA

Or the drafting of a very old set(Odyssey block!? :D). That would be soooo much fun.

Also, I think that the Daily Draft Debate should be given its own section on the site. Its so big and its kind of hiding away alot of really good articles and such.

bosheck says... #10

Lets give Alara the sendoff it deserves! By the time the debate is done, rotation day will be quite near.

July 29, 2010 10:35 a.m.

I would say MDragoon423 has the right idea. Either do the latest, or something very old.

X/10/11?

I/P/A?

TS/PC/FS?

I think something not in standard might be more interesting - make people think about general strategy instead of set-specific strategy, as i would guess that relatively few people here have been playing as long as I have (Mirrodin) and of those, few would remember how to draft that format.

misshepeshu says... #13

I have an unholy love of multi-color and Grixis, so I vote Alara.

July 29, 2010 12:32 p.m.

Xander574 says... #14

M11 just because the daily draft debate is something i accredit at least 50% of the skill i have at drafting and it is an amazing resource to help new people to drafting learn what are the best options.

July 29, 2010 2:42 p.m.

ALA/CON/ARB seems like it would be the more interesting set. But if we don't start m11 now we probably won't be doing it since scars should be out at about the same time that our next debate comes to a close.

Core sets are kind of boring to draft for me. I'd like to explore some older drafts, but at the same time, there's a valid point about getting the attention of people who are new/interested in modern standard. I'll think it over, please keep the comments coming, guys.

July 29, 2010 6:26 p.m.

MDragoon423 says... #17

Core sets are pretty boring to draft, I think its in the nature of core sets to be like that. One option could be to mix up sets, M11/Ravnica/Mirrodin? Something like that since theres something for everybody there.

OR you can find someone else who has a playgroup to host an M11/M11/M11 while you (Caley) host a draft with older sets.

July 29, 2010 6:45 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #18

You know, I think I like the idea of a crazy random, new-and-old-alike draft. I'll go with that next.

that sounds fun, but why not all base sets, like alpha, 5th, m11

Awesome Possum, I was getting a bit tired of seeing the same cards over and over again. =D

sporkife says... #21

Invasion / Homelands / Eventide

but really... there are lots of combinations of sets you could do, though you have to worry about set size (Time Spiral at 400 something vs Arabian Nights at under 100).

How exactly do you do these? Real cards? because things like boxes of Future Sight are expensive...

Tempest / Stronghold / Exodus

Let us reminisce!

They are e-generated and then we play them with proxies.

And I have decided. I will surprise you guys with it over the weekend when it debuts.

@SocialistElite: Thanks a ton for making me feel old with your "Odyssey is a super-old set" talk. My first draft was Ice Age.

Also, really glad we're not drafting Alara. I really, really hate that entire block.

July 30, 2010 9:49 a.m.

@ THE DR: haha. Sorry about that mate. Honostly, The Urza Block was my favorite block to draft back in the day. That and Homelands. But thats because my playgroup has a rule that if anywone opens the card Narwhal it automatically goes to me at the end of the draft. lol. But yeah. I just said Odyssey because its a super challenging draft. And its old to these new players with their fancy "Planeswalkers" and "Tribal Enchantments" and "Non-Islands". Psh.

August 1, 2010 11:10 p.m.

This conundrum has baffled me recently. As far as I can tell, there are no male angels in MTG. I can understand it in a place like Innistrad, where they were created by Sorin; however, on the other planes they seem to have no mutual progenitor. Can anyone explain this?

Unforgivn_II says... #28

Gabriel Angelfire and some Malach of the Dawn have been fathering a ton of children.

July 19, 2014 9:27 p.m.

The valkyries were all female, and so, yeah.

Its just a theme thats persisted throughout all history, and just feels right in a fantasy setting like Magic.

July 19, 2014 9:28 p.m.

SpammyV says... #30

In one of the Ravnica novels, angels are said to be incarnated. I assume that they are not born but are rather created as they are.

July 19, 2014 10:08 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #31

I believe Angels in Magic are defined as divine spirits created from usually pure white mana. Obviously there are exceptions to this though.

KrosanTusker says... #33

As GoldGhost012 said, they are created from a concentration of white mana (this has come up on either Doug's or Maro's tumblr, but do you want to do the scrollback through Blogatog!?).
Malach comes from the alternate reality of Planar Chaos block. I guess they do things differently there.

Naturally, there are no female Demons in magic either. Except Lady Orca .

There are some black Angels, presumably fallen or corrupted, but no white or green Demons (yet).

July 21, 2014 8:22 p.m.

My children were also created from a concentration of white mana.....

actually my favorite deck (Heaven and Earth) that brings down the cost of angels with stuff like Urza's Incubator and Pearl Medallion that I'm slowly (so very slowly) making alternate art for each of the cards. Urza's incubator is expecially horrifying to think about how angels are being manufactured so that's how this came about: http://kridxen.deviantart.com/art/Urza-s-Incubator-choosing-Angels-395271222?q=gallery%3Akridxen%2F1420676&qo=12

Officially, in the multiverse and according to the archives, angels and demons are created from the ideals of each plane. Angels from manifested ideals or attributes that proclaim divine attributes, and demons from the vices and evils that are present in those same places, which is why demons and angels are found on every plane.

A better question to ask is "What is a plane", as that can affect many things. Some people think them to be more like planets, but that falls apart when applied to planes such as Kamigawa, Lorwyn, Mirroden, and Rath. For instance, Lorwyn is described as a massive, nigh-never ending flat land, with the ends eventually fading away to a mist-like appearance and the cessation of existence, and we know that it's found a far away area of the multiverse and that it's difficult to get into. We also know there's no humans. Kamigawa was never directly commented on, but I always loved to imagine it as an alter universe form of Earth. Mirroden is described as a planet in a system with 5 suns orbiting it, and nothing else, and Rath, well, is a puddle of flowstone artificially created as a form of highlander battleship to dump doom and stuff onto dominaria.

Anyway, notice how most of these planes have Humans, Goblins, Merfolk, Beasts, Undead, and things like that. Also note how every plane's version of them are very different, then compare angels from Alara to angels from Zendikar. Different, no? The ideals that were followed and exemplified are different in every plane, and the angels follow to match. Avacyn was created from the stark, darker aspects of what I imagine to be desperate need for protection, gathered together by none other than Sorin. Iona was a protector that guarded the lonely and scattered and ruined people of Zendikar, and Serra was worshipped as the god of her pure and innocent-to-the-point-of-clueless people residing there.

Demons, officially follow the same route.

tl;dr: Ideals native to each plane.
