Middle Earth in Trouble

Deck Help forum

Posted on May 22, 2015, 1:17 a.m. by SirFowler

I have been working on this EDH theme deck for a while and I am at a standstill. I am having a hard time adding cards to my deck that actually fit the theme of the Middle Earth lore.

My biggest problems are these:

Should I add a ring for every ring mentioned?

Should I add creatures like Orcs and Goblins?

And if so, how many creatures are too much?

These are just a few problems that I am currently having. If you have thoughts on what I should add or why I added the cards I did, please tell me.

I will give you credit for helping me. And if this deck reaches the top, I might just put it together in real life. So don't forget to upvote as well.

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,

Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,

Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,

One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

That's 20 cards for you there.

9 Legendary Creatures for the Fellowship of the Ring

2 Humans

1 Elf

1 Dwarf

1 Wizard (try to find a White Wizard)

4 Halflings, or whatever the closest MtG comes. Probably Kithkin.

Wingmate Roc - the Eagles

Some kind of flaming demon for the Balrog.

Storm Crow, for Saruman's spies.

Saruman

Horn of Greed - Horn of Gondor

Elephants

Wall of Bone - the Black Gate

Smeagol

A giant spider

The Sword of the King

Evil Eye of Urborg - Eye of Sauron

Marsh Flats and Bojuka Bog

This is off the top of my head, but it's late and I might remember something else after sleep. I haven't actually checked your list so you might have a lot of this already.

Rakdos, Lord of Riots could be the Balrog

The thing is, Middle-Earth is big, and there are only 99 cards in an EDH deck. I think you should focus on a region/kingdom, a characters's story, or a specific event, that way you can fit in one card as one detail without fear of leaving something out.

Thank you for the suggestions everybody, but I do already have a lot of the cards mentioned.

Would you mind going to the deck and post on there and upvote? It just makes it easier on me so I don't have go back and forth to see the cards mentioned.

Thank you again. :)

@vault I have a question. Should I have Balthor the Stout as Gimli or Balthor the Defiled?

On one hand, Balthor the Stout is better mana fixing, but Balthor the Defiled is just an overall better card.

I don't have to many black/red creatures, but I don't have many barbarians as well. It's difficult to decide, but that's why I'm asking.

Also, I feel like the Evil Eye of Urborg wouldn't even do well in here. Do you know of another eye creature or something that represents an eye?

Blinding Mage as Gandalf? Sure he's a bit small but the ability and flavor is spot on. Also Clifftop Retreat as Gondor.

I actually have Mangara of Corondor as Gandalf, but thank you.
