Is Guttersnipe "good" in EDH?

Deck Help forum

I'm fine tuning a Melek, Izzet Paragon deck and I'm trying to find a decent balance between instants/sorcery spells and other stuff. One of the cards in question that I'm currently playing is Guttersnipe, and I know it can be great in 60-card decks, but is it good enough to bother playing in EDH?

Here is my deck, and I'd appreciate some input on this matter, as well as in general. Thanks!http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/im-a-little-weird/

As a rule burn isn't good in EDH. However; Guttersnipe rewards you for doing what you want to do anyway. He provides enough irritation that it may force an earlier Wrath or force a kill spell to be wasted on a 3 drop. You shouldn't count on him dealing any amount of damage for a planned win, but I feel that he will cause action in some way so he isn't a dead draw.

It really depends. Guttersnipe is a great card if you are running 30+ instants and sorceries. He will die, and you might not get a lot of value out of him. If he doesn't die, then you will be targeted more often. I removed him from my Melek deck since he just drew too much early game hate. If you have a faster build, then it probably won't be an issue.

Yeh, he absolutely is in a Melek deck. Assuming you're not aiming for the heights of competitive play. In a Melek deck you're going to be playing a ton of instants and sorceries right? So it makes Guttersnipe really, really good. I mean with Guttersnipe and cheap instants and sorceries you can quickly end games.

If you're trying to win with damage, yes, because Guttersnipe says "all your spells deal +2 damage". The thing is, it's hard for me to tell exactly what your deck does.

2 dmg is pretty irrelevant in edh unless your playing storm pretty hard. that would be the only instance that he would be good.

It might 'only' be 2 damage, but often Guttersnipe kills greedy planeswalkers that minus too quickly. Even if you don't have burn in your hand any instant or sorcery pulls double duty with him out.

@DarkHero 2 damage isn't irrelevant. Look at Purphoros, God of the Forge decks. Anyways, Guttersnipe will normally get in 6ish damage the first game you play him, then gets shot down hard. With 3 opponents, that is 18 damage. Not too shabby

So it seems the general consensus is to keep Guttersnipe, so I'll probably try to keep him. Right now though, the deck is kind of more a mash of cool stuff I found at my lgs and stuff I already had that I knew would be good for Melek, so it ended up turning into a goodstuff deck. The most competitive I'd be trying for is just some friends from school and maybe occasionally at a store or two. I think I could try to move it in more of a storm direction to focus it more

I'd sayYoung Pyromancer would be better. Also Scroll Rack, Brainstorm, Ponder, Sensei's Divining Top would all be great for top deck manipulation to ensure you are able to have the spells you want on the top to copy!

In general guttersnipe is not good in commander. In a Typical Melek build (instant and sorcery heavy) he is actually a fairly solid 3 drop. What makes him very good in this instance is that he adds an essence of inevitability to the board without having to attack. His ability also triggers regardless if the spell resolves or not.

lemmingllama it is irrelevant. Purphoros, God of the Forge decks are only good because of Norin the Wary and Assemble the Legion things like that that actually compound the 2 dmg. Hence my saying a storm deck would make sense because it isn't actually deal only 2 dmg. You have 40 life. Picking away at someone turn by turn will just get you targeted and blown out of the water.
