I am very fond of Searing Meditation, but I do not like how it does not provide a method for its controller to gain life and thus trigger its ability. Given that WotC has been printing creature versions of non-creature cards that have lifelink and, thus, synergy with themselves (i.e., Rhox Faithmender compared with Boon Reflection and Archangel of Thune compared with Cradle of Vitality), I feel that it would be perfectly appropriate to create a creature version of searing meditation that can gain life and thus has synergy with its ability. Thus, here is the result of my efforts:

Sunfire Legionnaire Show

This creature has lifelink, so it can cause its own ability to trigger, I gave it first strike, simply because that ability made sense for a red/white creature, and I improved its triggered ability so that the damage that it deals is variable, akin to the ability of Well of Lost Dreams. I was considering making its a 3/3, but I decided that would make it too powerful for only 1 mana more than searing meditation, so it is a 2/2.

What does everyone else say about this? How well did I do with this card?

If you wanted to give it 3 power, you could cut it's toughness down to 1 to try and balance it. The 1 toughness would be midigated when swinging anyway because it has first strike.

I like it, but it almost NEEDS to be a 3/1 to be anywhere worthwhile

So the second ability still triggers lifelink, so of you get one hit in, you can deal damage and gain life equal to the amount of mana you can pay. In fact, this goes infinite with Channel.

Even if this were a non-first striking 1/1, if you can gain life, you get ": Deal 1 damage to target creature or player and gain 1 life" until end of turn. IMHO I think thats a very strong card for commander, so the extra stuff is just fluff. Repeatable pseudo-board wipe with strong lifegain? Yes please.

CastleSiege, blackmarker90, I am wary of making this creature a 3/1, since it costs 4 mana, which seems to be rather high for a creature with toughness that low. Would it still be balanced as a 3/2 or a 2/3?

Think of it this way, whether it has 1, 2, or 3 toughness, it still dies to any number of red burn spells. Given 3 power, and a powerful ability with the keywords that it has, I feel this card would still be very good with 1 toughness at 4 CMC. Giving it lower toughness to balance out a higher power causes it do die to anything with higher than 3 toughness which I feel is a fair trade off.
