Viability of Mutate in CMDR

I've now tried twice to build Mutate EDH, and it just doesn't seem realistic. I tried with Otrimi, the Ever-Playful, but he needs voltron or infect to be effective which cuts out mutate in general as a theme.

Am I missing something or is there just not enough of it yet?

I don't see how voltron or infect cuts out mutate. It is a very different mechanic than it might seem like at first but voltron is exactly what you want to be doing with most of the mutating commanders. Pick 10 to 15 creatures as a "base" that is creatures that don't have mutate but offer a nice set of abilities to mutate onto. +1/+1 counters would be good for Ortrimi so maybe Heroes' Bane would be a good start. Then you have an 10/10 trample, not bad. Grab the best mutates for your colors and maybe slap in some not so good ones. I wouldn't run less than 10 with Otrimi. Fill up on reasons to bring things back from the grave. Sac outlets for instance. Just a note I haven't really looked at Otrimi so I might be missing something cool.

I also want to say in my opinion Otrimi is one of the weaker mutate commanders. He wants more of an effect that there isn't much of where as the others can function as the only mutate in the deck. Though they are probably improved upon by having a few additional mutates.

Here are a few examples of neat mutate decks. Nethroi and Vadrok. I think Otrimi can work but probably not as well as those ones will work... Maybe someone can prove me wrong.

I stumbled upon an interaction for Mutate that shouldn't be underestimated: Mutate spells target. So they trigger any heroic ability, and they also trigger Gargos, Vicious Watcher.

A kind of cute interaction is Anthousa, Setessan Hero. Animating for example a Cascading Cataracts and then mutating something onto it seems cool.

More fitting heroics in Otrimi's colours include:

Agent of the Fates

Battlefield Thaumaturge

Centaur Battlemaster

Hero of Leina Tower (and some more heroics that get multiple counters)

Mindreaver

Triton Fortune Hunter

Other colours of mutate commanders grant access to other useful heroics.

Would Torrent Elemental work as a good target for mutate? And if Ob Nixilis, the Fallen works itd be a good target for mutate too

Remember mutate can only target non-human creatures.

MindAblaze: Damn. Good catch. And off go my dreams of mutated heroes.

There’s only 13 non-humans with heroic. I’d be ok with testing at least Triton Fortune Hunter in the deck at least.

I love mutate, and I wanted to find some way to make it work. I threw together a list, feel free to take a look. I feel fairly happy with it, but I'll know more when I actually get to test it. I leaned more towards bogles in the design aspect for how to use mutate.

I may have underestimated Otrimi in my original comment. Command Zone points out some really neat things with persist/undying and other silly things. I still would rate Otrimi as one of the worse mutate commanders but mutate as a whole looks stronger after this video to me.

There's also a cool interaction with Tenacious Dead, which allows all of your mutations to come back into play as creatures for a single payment of .

Also Spawnwrithe, which is really fun to clone when he's got a bunch of abilities tacked on. (Also, yes I checked; if you make a token that's a copy of a mutated creature, it gets all of the abilities)
