Hey thanks for adding me. I will mull this one over tonight and look through my Legendary binder see if something jumps out at me.

I love tribal so I really like the idea here. My first instinct would be to take the banned list from commander and use that as a starting point. Banned cards in a singleton format will most likely be MORE broken here. There may be some exceptions though.

Question: Is this intended to be a duel commander variant or a multiplayer variant?

Because that will have a large impact on Monarch and card selection.

I envision it being pretty much like EDH, you can do 1v1 or multiplayer depending on what your group wants.

This is broken beyond control. Broken Monarch. You need to add these to the ban list.

Kryzis Yep I know I would be adding lots to the ban list, the power 9 of course and a lot of things on your list. The EDH list is probably a good place to start like mentioned above.

There's an option for an additional rule I'm thinking about where you can't have more mythics than rares, more rares than uncommons, more uncommons than commons (so the majority would be common) and that coupled with the limited number rule could help keep decks from being too overpowered and still allow the option of rare dual lands etc. thoughts on that?

shinobigarth I think that would be too restricting. This format could take off, but with that amount of restrictions on deck building it won't go anywhere as people will feel too constrained.

The EDH ban list is probably good, and with more play testing, we can weed out the cards that are too good in multiples for this.

Also, I forgot to ask this, is the Monarch in the command zone like EDH, or is it in the deck itself?

I'm sorry for the triple post, but I just noticed that you updated the banlist, and I was wondering if the legendary creatures on there are just banned as Monarchs or from the 99, or both?

noted.

and yes the monarch is in the command zone like EDH, the only difference is i don't think there will be commander damage because games shouldn't be as deadlocked as EDH when you have multiple copies of some cards. but then i don't have a whole lot of EDH experience so thats only speculation on my part.

i think the legendaries will be banned from both unless someone comes up with a convincing argument for allowing as the monarch or the 99.

Sweet, thanks. That makes designing these decks a lot easier. I've got a couple in the works right now.

I think the dual lands should be moved to restricted, as well as Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, and Sol Ring.

Thoughts on restricting Treasure Cruise?

Ok so I have a question I believe is unique to this format. While looking through possible commanders I stopped on Baru, Fist of Krosa and started thinking.

In EDH/Commander you are only allowed one copy of any non-basic card. That is not the case in Monarch. Could I run Baru as my commander and another copy in my 99 since he's rare?

It would be nice to be able to trigger granduer which is something that (barring crazy copy shenanigans) is impossible in Commander. I don't think it would break this format for that to be possible though we would have to consider how a commander going to the command zone would effect this ability. As far as I can figure though the combos that would be possible would be just as hard or harder to pull off than many of the infinite combos already out there.

What do you guys think? Are granduer legends a hiccup that need to be addressed or are they now simply more viable?

Good question that I hadn't thought of. Is there any instance where it would be vital to keep the commander copy and the normal drawn copy separate and mixing them up would be a problem? We can always ban legendaries from being used as a commander.

Or easier yet just say legendaries are all restricted to 1-of period.

I have a question about the card Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip on one side hes a Human werewolf and on the other he's only werewolf can I still use him if my Monarch is a human?

July 18, 2015 12:43 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #20

Zaxtonous yes you can, if the creature has any side that matches a monarch type it's legal. I should probably denote that in the rules.
