Playtesting, Part Deux —July 6, 2015

This update is a bit late, but I did another round of playtesting weekend before last and came to a few more conclusions about what my deck does well and what it needs. To that end, I made some fairly hefty revisions today. They include:

  • Reduced the number of instants and sorceries significantly. This means removing some flavorful cards like Epic Experiment in lieu of other things. This change has left a few other cards, like Dismiss into Dream and Talrand, Sky Summoner in a weird place. if I find something else to include, they'll probably be some of the first to go.

  • The aforementioned culling has paved the way for me to include a number of fun new cards that focus on card drawing and taking advantage of a large hand, like Master the Way and Jace's Erasure.

  • Added some new ways to increase the number of extra turns I can take. Chrono shenanigans seem like something the Izzet would definitely partake in, so it fits with the flavor as well. These include Nivix Guildmage's and Echo Mage's general ability to copy instants and sorceries and Mirror Sheen's ability to copy Time Stretch. These will keep me from having to use Past in Flames to get more turns, letting me continue the combo for a while. Throw in Charmbreaker Devils and a sufficient number of turns and I can pull off nigh infinite turns. Speaking of which, I think I may clear another card out just to include Ral Zarek, who is both useful and pumps up the flavor of the deck.

  • Looking into some ways of speeding the deck up with some tutoring. I'm considering adding Ring of Three Wishes to get whatever cards I feel like using at the moment. The transmute cards are also a possibility, though that hinges on whether I have anything useful in the relevant CMC. It's on my radar though.

  • Lastly, looking into culling some cards out in anticipation of Origins. I can't do links yet since they haven't come out, but Sphinx's Tutelage and Alhammaret's Archive are both definitely going in the deck as soon as I can get my hands on a copy.

So, my current plans for the deck are to make it more card draw oriented and to improve on my time shenanigans. As always, all suggestions are deeply appreciated.
