You may spend mana as though it were mana of any color?

Asked by MikeFishy 2 years ago

So, I had an interaction where I hard cast Chromatic Orrery with all my lands and I had the 5 colorless from Chromatic Orrery . I wanted to Shock and Fire Prophecy , but I only had colorless. Does Chromatic Orrery make it matter whether the mana is colorless? Or can I spend colorless mana as though it were mana of any color?

Chromatic Orrery and other similar things that allow you to spend mana as if it were mana of any color allow you to spend any mana as if it were mana of any color. This includes colorless as well as WUBRG mana.

Now however, that this doesn't change the color of the mana; you can tap Chromatic Orrery to cast Bring to Light spending the mana as if it were , but since you actually spent , it can only get a 0 mana card.

Gidgetimer, are you sure about that?

My understanding is that if the card says you can "Spend mana as if it were any type" (eg Hostage Taker ) that this would include WUBRG and Colourless, but if it says you can "Spend mana as if it were any colour" (eg Daxos of Meletis ) that you can't use coloured mana to pay for colourless costs.

Named_Tawyny Yes I am sure about what I said. Though apparently I didn't state it clearly enough since you seem to have mistook what I was saying.

What I meant was "When you can spend mana as if it were mana of any color it doesn't matter if the original mana is colorless or one of the colors, it can be spent as if it is any color."

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying! I'd originally assumed that that last sentence was explaining how it could be spent, not how it could originate.

Thanks!
