When can I Destroy Tormod's Crypt without it being sacked to destroy my graveyard?

Asked by commodorecanary 12 years ago

I've been testing a Humanimator deck, and Tormod's Crypt keeps getting in the way, via opponent sideboarding. When can I use something like Abrupt Decay or Shattering Blow to eliminate it? The same people seem to conveniently know that I can't do it after its sacrificed, but NOT when I can interrupt it. Ideas?

You can't stop it.

If you cast Abrupt Decay before your opponent activates Tormod's Crypt, your opponent can just activate Tormod's Crypt in response.

If your opponent activates Tormod's Crypt, it will be sacrificed and therefore be an illegal target for any removal spells.

You can stop it, but it requires another card. One example is Stony Silence on the field, which prevents artifacts from being activated. Another is Pithing Needle, choosing Tormod's Crypt.

Actually there is a way. You'd need to find a way to tap Tormod's Crypt with something like Gridlock. Because the Crypt's ability's cost includes tapping it, your opponent won't be able to respond to removal with sacrificing it when it's tapped. Of course he could still respond to your attempt to tap it in the first place, so your attempt would need to be subtle enough for your opponent not to see through your plan. Now, I'm just saying this to elaborate on what's been said. I actually don't think that adding extra cards just to tap the Crypt is worth the trouble.

One further option would be using a Detain ability that targets a "nonland permanent" (New Prahv Guildmage, for one).

Krosan Grip could destroy it without exiling your graveyard if you cast the krosan grip before your opponent adtivate Tormod's Crypt

The problem I'm seeing with all of these answers is that both the tapping and the sacrificing of Tormod's Crypt is in the cost, meaning that you can't destroy it in response to him tapping and sacrificing it, and if you were to use some other ability that uses the stack, it too could be responded to by tapping and saccing Tormod's Crypt. The only real way to counter this card is to literally a card like Willbender where you change the ability's target or you can just simply using cards like Azorius Guildmage, Bind, or Stifle. If you're trying to make it standard then you could always set up your own effects such as Elixir of Immortality which will save your graveyard if he targets it with his Tormod's Crypt (It will completely reset your setup, but at least it won't put your key factors in exile).

You can also use cards like Leyline of Sanctity , or True Believer to prevent anyone from targeting you.
