What counts as a color for Knight of New Alara?
Asked by Sudain 14 years ago
Knight of New Alara says each other critter gets +1/+1 for each color it has.
That makes sense for Sprouting Thrinax making him a 6/6 and creating 3 2/2 tokens. But what about Prince of Thralls for example. Does that black mana count twice because it's listed twice?
If so does that mean with Progenitus and card:Mayael's Aria he'd be a 20/20 card and I'd win on my next upkeep?
If no I should still be able to use Demonspine Whip to jack up his attack power as an instant(during the untap step) to win that way, correct?
Rhadamanthus has it, a card's colour is defined by how many different mana symbols are in it's cost, not how many coloured symbols there are.
While you can respond to Mayael's Aria, you can't equip Progenitus with the whip (or anything, for that matter). Strap it onto Emrakul, the Aeons Torn instead.

Note thought that the Sprouting Thrinax would not create 2/2 tokens. Knight of New Alara only buffs multicolor creatures, not mono-color creatures, and the tokens created by the Thrinax are just green. They get left out of the fun.

Okay cool. I am very glad I asked. :)
Progenitus can't be have the whip equipped because he has protection from everything.
Good catch MagnorCriol, I didn't catch they tokens were monocolor. Which makes me sad but that's alright. :D

Just another note, you can't equp the whip to Emrakul, the Aeons Torn either, due to the fact that it has protection from colored spells. That being said, there's plenty of colorless equipment that makes Emarkul somehow scarier than it already was, like Loxodon Warhammer and Whispersilk Cloak and Argentum Armor ...

Emrakul has protection from colored spells, but a permanent on the battlefield - like the whip - is no longer a spell. Something is only a spell while it's on the stack. The whip can attach to Emmy just fine.
This is why you can still exile Emmy with an Oblivion Ring or Journey to Nowhere . Both of those spells use triggered abilities to work their magic, which means they trigger when it enters the battlefield - so they're permanents, not spells, when they're aiming at Emmy.
Look at the way Etched Champion is worded - "protection from all colors". The difference between the way the two are worded is significant.

No prob. That's a weird ability, it gets around common sense pretty easily. =p

Knight of New Alara counts what different colors the creature is, not how many colored mana symbols are in the cost. Prince of Thralls is Red, Blue, and Black, 3 colors, so he gets +3/+3. Progenitus is White, Blue, Black, Red, and Green, 5 colors, so he gets +5/+5.
You can respond to the triggered ability of card:Mayael's Aria with pump effects, yes.
