Swamp or not Swamp? that is the question lol

Asked by tonii369 12 years ago

My question is a little simple: Does Godless Shrine count as a Swamp, Plains, Both or None??

Both.

It is a "Swamp" a "Plains" and a "Non-basic Land"

It is not a "Basic Land" "Basic Swamp" or "Basic Plains"

Examples:

  1. First turn, i enter Godless Shrine tapped. Second turn, would Isolated Chapel enter the field tap?

  2. Liliana of the Dark Realms if i use her +1, can i add a Godless Shrine to my hand? or if i use her -6, can i count Godless Shrine as 4 manas?

  1. Nope, Isolated Chapel would enter untapped since it checks for a Swamp or Plains (they don't have to be Basic).

  2. Yes and yes, because she doesn't specify Basic Swamp, only swamp. Nice huh? :)

Whereas Esper Panorama can't find it because it says "A basic plains, island or swamp"

Basically, you can look at the card itself (or, for older cards, the Gatherer), to answer the questions.

"Is it a Swamp?" Check it's land type. If it says Swamp (as Godless Shrine does), then it's a Swamp. Old cards like Bayou don't say it on the type line but do mention it in the rules text, and the Gatherer identifies it as a "Land - Swamp Forest" same as the Overgrown Tomb .

"Is it a basic land?" Check on the type line again. It would be to the left of the word "Land" as on Swamp . Snow-Covered Swamp is also a basic Swamp. Leechridden Swamp is not because it doesn't say "Basic" next to "Land" in the Gatherer text.
