Planeswalker loyalty question

Asked by meecht 12 years ago

On a Planeswalker, their loyalty is a type of counter, correct?

I'm wondering if the interaction between Gilder Bairn and a Planeswalker would allow you to pop the ultimate on the same turn the 'walker is played.

Gilder Bairn can double the number of Loyalty Counters on a Planeswalker.

Or course, you need to have 3 untapped Mana and a tapped Gilder Bairn at the time you play the 'walker to do that.

The more broken way to do what you want to do involves a little pricier card called Doubling Season

I think Doubling Season would be real obvious and a fairly big target, though. The moment you play it, your opponent(s) know stuff is about to go down. I'm wondering if Gilder Bairn would be able to sneak in under the radar at least a little longer than Doubling Season.

I'm only just starting to get into non-Standard formats, so I'm not yet sure what cards people see as "that must be removed NOW" versus "that can stay on the field a little while longer."

As a general rule of thumb, people target rares before uncommons. However, in this specific situation, it really does depend on what colors you're playing against. Green and/or white are likely to destroy your enchantment as soon as possible, whereas red and/or black would target the creature first (obviously). The key here though, is which planeswalker(s) you're using. People are quite likely to leave a Gilder Bairn alone, at least until they know what you're using it for. Once they see that it's there to bolster a planeswalker, it's better to have a planeswalker that can protect you and your permanents with it's ultimate, like Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker or something to give you an emblem. I would suggest considering throwing in some "decoys", for what your opponents think the Gilder Bairn is for. These decoys don't have to be bad cards, just creatures or artifacts to get their focus away from planeswalkers. I would suggest Primordial Hydra , Darksteel Reactor , Helix Pinnacle , Archmage Ascension , Djinn of Wishes and/or Parallax Tide .

Ajani, Caller of the Pride ? Since Gilder Bairn is a hybrid card you can play g/w or U/W with it AND it would only be a total of 6 mana open in order to accomplish this. Easy to do with ramp :)

Yes, my point on that one is that if your deck is blue and green, I would assume you're running some moderately heavy mana ramping. It's always a good idea to have alternate win conditions.

I must now find a way to squeeze Gilder Bairn into my EDH deck. So many "comes into play with X charge counters" cards that just beg to be abused...
