how exactly does Torpor Orb work?
Asked by lendrick 12 years ago
When I see this rule about Torpor Orb :"Abilities that apply "as [this creature] enters the battlefield," such as choosing a creature to copy with Clone , are unaffected."
I became confused, Clone are unaffected, but what about Trinket Mage or similar?
Clone says "You may have Clone enter the battlefield" so this is a replacement effect?
Trinket Mage says "When Trinket Mage enters the battlefield" it's a triggered ability?
Torpor Orb only restricts triggered abilities from 'When [...] enters the battlefield'.
Other abilities still work.

If a card says "When Trinket Mage enters the battlefield" is basically saying that Trinket Mage hits the table and THEN something happens. These are the effects that Torpor prevents from happening.
Clone 's ability is determined before he even hits the table. (It has to be or he'd always enter as a 0/0 and die.) Because it happens before he even enters the battlefield, his ability is not subject to Torpor Orb .
As the previous poster said, look for the "When [...] enters the battlefield ..." text on a card. It's a good indicator that Torpor Orb works on it.
Also, If you cloned a trinket mage, the clone would enter the battlefield as the tricket mage and then promptly do nothing because of the Torpor Orb.

I see, thanks guys.
Another question that involves creatures abilities, if I have Cursed Totem and Gustcloak Savior in battlefield, I can use his ability (i don't know if that is considered an activated ability)?

Yes you can Gustcloak Savior as a triggered ability
Activated abilities are when you see [cost] : [something happen].
Cost can be alot of thing going from mana, tap, untap, sacrifice, pay life.....
Triggered ability are when something happen, and then the ability "trigger"

wait, what about The Mimeoplasm
??
that guy says "As it enters" so torpor orb affects it?
Tell me please because on my store we are playing like if it is affected, however the rule says: "9/22/2011: Treat The Mimeoplasm as though it were the creature card it's copying entering the battlefield. Any "As [this card] enters the battlefield," "[This card] enters the battlefield with," and "When [this card] enters the battlefield" abilities of that creature card will work."

The Mimeoplasm is just like a clone. He enters as the battlefield as a copy of a creature with a series of +1/+1 counters on him.

Basically, if it says "When [this creature] enters the battlefield..." then Torpor Orb affects it. If it says "As [this creature] enters the batlefield..." then it's not affected.

Just to make everything clear:
Triggered abilities always start with the word "when", "whenever", or "at". If the ability doesn't start with one of those words, then it isn't a triggered ability. Trinket Mage and Gustcloak Savior have triggered abilities.
Activated abilities are always written as "Cost : Effect". If the ability isn't written that way, then it isn't an activated ability. Some examples of activated abilities include Prodigal Pyromancer , Crypt Rats , and Alchemist's Apprentice .
Anything else is a static ability. The abilities on Clone and The Mimeoplasm are a special type of static ability called a replacement effect. You can usually tell a replacement effect by the presence of one or more of the words "as", "with", "instead", or "prevent" somewhere in the explanation.

Clone 's effect is a replacement effect, so doesn't use the stack. If it were a triggered ability, Clone would go to the graveyard.
Trinket Mage has a triggered ability, so usually goes to stack.
