Crushing Pain Overkill???
Asked by jaibathegreat 14 years ago
Context - In play is Repercussion Forbidden Orchard AEther Flash and various Mountain s.
If I tap Forbidden Orchard to give my opponent a 1/1, AEther Flash will trigger and deal 2 dmg, which will cause 2 dmg to be dealt to player, I'm good with that...
What I would like to know is "Am I able to cast a Crushing Pain on the 1/1 to deal 8 dmg to it and my opponent before the Spirit dies and leaves play?"
No.
When you tap Forbidden Orchard , a 1/1 colorless Spirit creature token is put into play under your opponent's control. Then, AEther Flash triggers and goes on the stack.
Now, if you tried to cast Crushing Pain at this point, the Spirit creature token would be an invalid target. If you waited until after AEther Flash resolved, the Spirit creature token would be in the graveyard, and thus be an invalid target.

Further clarification:
The Spirit creature token would be an invalid target in the first scenario because it would not yet have been dealt damage.

The only way around this is to have your opponent bring into play a creature with toughness higher then 3, then your AEther Flash would go off, resolve and then you could cast the Crushing Pain.

Unfortunately arobidoux is correct. If however your oponent play a creature that loves through AEther Flash then Crushing Pain is a great answer. oh an 8/8 eldrazi? Not anymore.

Put Wall of Tanglecord on a Mimic Vat . In response to the AEther Flash triggering, give the wall to your opponent with Bazaar Trader , after the damage is dealt to the opponent, Crushing Pain FTW!

I agree, you would need something with more than 2 toughness in order to survive AEther Flash .

Thank you to all the answers (and combo suggestions)...It was as I suspected, to have been classified as 'dealt damage' the damage needed to have resolved and killed the creature...
I like the idea of giving the opponent a Darksteel Myr , open target to deplete their life for cheap with Crushing Pain and other cheap damage spells (like Flame Slash )
Again, thank you heaps for the clarification....great community!

This is a good question.
My gut tells me that no, you would not be able to, because at the time Crushing Pain is being cast, the creature you're trying to target has not been dealt damage yet this turn, and thus is not a valid target for Crushing Pain yet.
I'll do some more research to double-check, but that's my answer for the moment.
