BFZ - Zada, Hedron Grinder clarification

Asked by TacoFactory 8 years ago

If I created a R/W deck built around the Heroic mechanic, would targeting Zada, Hedron Grinder trigger their Heroic ability as well?

For reference Hero of Iroas.

From Gatherer:

9/15/2013: Heroic abilities wont trigger when a copy of a spell is created on the stack or when a spells targets are changed to include a creature with a heroic ability.

You have to cast the spell in order to trigger heroic. Copies of spells are not cast, they are simply placed on the stack, so no interaction with heroic there.

As your question rolled around in my head, I remembered when I built a R/W Heroic deck that pooped out tokens.... Launch the Fleet only targeting Zada, Hedron Grinder would strive incredibly cheaply... launching a ludicrous amount of tokens... which could then all be beefed with a defiant strike onto Phalanx Leader... which could then get a Temur Battle Rage back on Zada to give all the tokens that Phalanx just beefed up double strike...

yeah, Zada would definitely work in a Heroic deck, just not specifically the way you thought.

Though Zada and Heroic are exclusive to each other in Standard, since Theros block is going to rotate the day he becomes Standard legal.

Devonin... I saw that too... then I noticed all 4 of the decks OP has ever made are all modern... I'm pretty sure we're safe :)

what if we want to use Fling on him would it target all the my creatures on him? or Soul's Fire would it work or would i just throw a Zada, Hedron Grinder at them and be sad?

Neither would work. Zada's text clarifies that the spell in question can only have one target - Zada. Even targeting another player counts as a new target, forfeiting Zada's ability.

what about Chandra's Ignition? or is that still targeting something other then Zada?

January 6, 2016 8:19 a.m.

That works, because the keyword "each" does not specify who exactly takes the damage. There are no other targets other than Zada.

Quick question: if the copied spell has a second effect besides the targeting effect (i.e. Expedite: "Target creature gains haste until end of turn. Draw a card."), would the second effect activate for each copy as well? Would all my creatures only gain haste until end of turn, or would I draw a card for each creature as well?

You'd also draw for each copy, but you probably should have asked this as its own question post, instead of posting on a 9 month old one.
