Break out

Pioneer forum

I have been away from magic for a bit and just popped back in and discovered the card Break Out. It just seems really really nice for Aggro decks or any small zoo deck.

My first thought is to compare this card to Collected Company... the sorcery speed kinda gets offset by giving a 2MV creature haste and can still just put higher mana value creatures like Ghor-Clan Rampager in hand.

Has anybody been trying out this card? It just seems pretty nutty to me.

I've seen it in some shells with Burning-Tree Emmisary to keep chaining effects. But otherwise I haven't seen a solid, top tier home for it

Omg Burning-Tree Emissary into this seems awesome... literally the only reason I haven't been running that card has been because I have been so used to running Jegantha, the Wellspring.

I'm long off Jeggy, I feel like he doesn't help as much as the 15th SB slot. The restriction doesn't come into play very often but when it does I just drop Jeggy all together.

To me, I think the green + red + other color decks are just really consistent already that they wouldn't run more than 2 of these. When the games are on curve and usually get more ramp or the big thing necessary, it's kind of redundant.

It gets an elf or burning tree out or the big thing in hand, but not much more.

there's also just not a lot of good 2cmcs like modern has like Bowmasters, Goyf, or Ragavan.

I'd love to get things like unlicensed hearse but vehicles aren't creatures...

3cmc also seems like the magic number in pioneer: lots of decks collected company gets up to 2 with 3cmc or less, so you're still well on curve/tempo.

I'm also on board with user:itsbuzzi With Jegantha. If I have to cast Jegantha , things aren't going well in my games.

With the playtesting I've been doing there are 3 main observations I've made so far.

  • a blind break out on turn 2+ with no other plays available feels very... "why not" ... it pseudo tutors into a card your already playing/want to see and give it haste... however it does feel bad hitting one drops like Phoenix Chick and Monastery Swiftspear; and so far I've never WANTED to just add a card in hand but the option is nice I guess.

  • Regardless of the turn burning tree emissary into break out feels good amd almost feels mandatory to play together. Whether its turn 2 and just populating the board and putting on pressure or after a board wipe to get back into the game amd finish it.

  • digging for specific creatures for certain situations like Scavenging Ooze or Cankerbloom can feel really strong.

One more thing I would like to say is that if your splashing for an off color getting those creatures into play is a lot easier Hushbringer for example is super easy to have as a sideboard option.

As long as you don't have any ETB triggers hushbringer is great, otherwise containment priest is awesome. White has some solid SB options for sure if you need them.
