what do you think of the new symbol for tapping either whatever color mana or pay 2 life as an alternate cost and if you really care how do you think it will change the meta.

we already know that surgical-extraction will break apart dredge in legacy.

heres a link to a site with the spoiler:

I love it. Life is a resource. If I can pay 4 life, 20% of my life, to get a turn 5 spell in turn 3, I will damn well pay the 4 life because it will let me impact the board sooner and hense probably saving a swing or two of damage, therefor maybe even saving me some life. All depends in the cards.

I think it's going to be hell on the color distribution. That "Surgical Extraction" card they previewed in Monday's arcana as the Buy-A-Box card promotion? Suddenly all decks have access to a Memoricide

(Far cheaper and at instant speed, too - except for the fact it has to target a card already in the graveyard, so it can't hit a threat before it sees play, it's all but strictly better...)

I'm not too thrilled about the speed factor, either. I don't think this game needs to be even faster than it already is.

But, like Leafs_suck said, a lot depends on the cards it's on and how they stand up. We'll see. Certainly, it's a terrifically flavorful mechanic that gets the feel of Phyrexia across well.

haha. really. that card is going to be the buy-a-box-promo?

hallelujah! Playing black just gets better and better. It feels a little unfair almost...

People playing MBC are surely stoked.

Limited is going to be so easy now...

April 13, 2011 4:48 a.m.

MagnorCriol says... #6

But really, it's not playing black that's going to be so easy. That card's effectively colorless, it can go into anywhere. RDW with Memoricide, Caw-Go with Memoricide, Green Fatty Ramp with Memoricide...

Turn 1 in mill or even an off-shot of it. Tome Scour , Shriekhorn , or even Horrifying Revelation into Surgical extraction, possibly multiple ones...

That sounds delightfully hax,

Carn13 says... #11

So hax, in fact, that I want it in the spoiler. Like right now. It's been officially spoiled, so what are we waiting for?

April 13, 2011 8:53 p.m.

supernick says... #12

no why even waste turn one? pay 2 life before u even draw. before the game EVEN STARTS! i mean before even LEYLINES can enter. thats the kind of speed im talking about. "ok if i have surgical extraction in my opening hand im gunna call cardname, oh look, i call cardname. ok so who goes first now?

April 13, 2011 8:59 p.m.

um...you have to target a card in the graveyard first dude. so...that at the minimum is a requirement for a legal target.

Then you can go to town with your speed you are talking about.

April 13, 2011 9:02 p.m.

oh my god, i JUST thought about using surgical extraction on mill? face palm that is a perfect stradegy. hurry up and put it in the spoiler so i can build a deck. sadistic sacrament has made a new friend.

personally i love and hate the new symbol at the same time. i love it because you can fit it into any deck (a red card in a mono blue for example) because you just have to pay the life (which is extremely black btw). But i hate it for that exact same reason.

April 13, 2011 10:23 p.m.

DofusTal says... #15

Psst, surgical extraction needs a card to be in the graveyard for it to be affective.

Anyways I love the new symbol, I will be able to sideboard any of those cards in any one of my decks. Hex Parasite in my Blue White infect, maybe if I head on against another planeswalker deck, this will make life easier, or really, lack of life.

does anyone know if there will be anything new to help myr or any new myr stuff?

April 15, 2011 10:51 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #17

Well, they've shown us a Myr token from this set, so one can safely assume.

Also, they wouldn't dare let a Mirrodin set go by without doing some myr. People love them too much. =p

April 16, 2011 12:01 a.m.

have you seen the visual spoilers for NP ziablo?

they show a lone myr, and then they have a really big myr surrounded by little myr. so i would count on at least 2 more myr cards.

Phyrexian Mana symbols?

Using my flavor goggles, the idea is beautiful and is one the best things the dev team has done in this block so far.

Using my card design goggles, I harbor a mix of hate and fear.

On the one hand, it could be perfectly balanced and make for fun combat shenanigans. On the other more likely hand, the phyrexian mana leaves A LOT of room to make an OP or broken card. I mean, they have to regulate those prices carefully or we might end up with a power creep shooting out the roof.

April 16, 2011 6:56 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #21

Well put, Zungx.

The simple fact that, say, monoblue or blue-[X] control could have access to burn spells, or some other more potent example I'm not coming up with right now, is what makes me nervous. I'm sure they've thought of that, though.

i see it being pretty crazy just from one card

surgical extraction-

(pb can be paid with either B or 2 life.) Choose target card in a graveyard other than a basic land card. Search its owner's graveyard, hand, and library for any number of cards with the same name as that card and exile them. Then that player shuffles his or her library

turn one- Duress , targeting Jace, the Mind Sculptor

followed up with surgical extraction for free.

go.

April 16, 2011 10:25 p.m.

Zungx says... #23

Or turn one-Inquisition of Kozilek , targeting Squadron Hawk , Goblin Bushwhacker or Kuldotha Rebirth ...

Followed up with surgical extraction for free.

Congratulations, you just got rid of a win condition T1...

This is why I hope they don't go overboard with those costs, if they end up making a creature that uses phyrexian mana, that creature might possibly become strictly better than a lot of other cards.

April 17, 2011 11:07 a.m.

Select says... #24

thats my point alot of people think that this cards is ok because it needs card in you opponents graveyard, but its not hard to get cards there.

April 17, 2011 2 p.m.

xo2 says... #25

they need a phyrexian mana symbol planeswalker

April 17, 2011 5:35 p.m.

MagnorCriol says... #26

T1 planeswalker, before I even play a land? They'd have to make all of its abilities completely useless for it to even remotely be balanced.

April 17, 2011 5:50 p.m.

xo2 says... #27

they need to make a planeswalker with pyrexian mana symbols!

April 17, 2011 5:54 p.m.

xo2 says... #28

sorry about the double post.

it would have to cost 1 or 2 colorless too, but that would be sweet. or have alot of phyrexia mana symbols to make you lose like 10 life.

April 17, 2011 5:57 p.m.

SwiftDeath says... #29

like one of the shards of alara block creatures where you pay 2 colorless and one of each color except the color will be colored phyrexian symbols

thats an interesting concept however i dont think it will ever be made due to the loss of life will cause it to never see competitive play unless you are playing a triple color deck like naya, bug, or jund and the effect would have to correspond so it would be worth paying the life.

April 17, 2011 7:22 p.m.

hmmmm even paying all 5 colors for a great card and then being able to pay 10 life instead... i like the idea. its possible and i want it. make it a extremely powerful card too so your going to want to pay all that life, but then again i doubt they will do it too because of a turn one thing. turn one drop it onto field big 7/7 creature. you go to 10 life. well now the opponent has no way of dealing with you. if in a green deck or black, there will be little you could ever do to stop it. turn one giant growth make it a 10/10 then do it again next turn you win. wont happen.

I dont really think there could be a phyrexian planeswalker. i dont think they create the spark, because they arent really being born. unless maybe they corrupted a planeswalker. (maybe venser? lol.) and if they did make one, it sure as hell would not cost less than Jace.(not JTMS)
