Noticed some wierd things in decks lately.

Lately every deck I look at has like 8 creatures, or like 15 ridiculously high casting cost creatures. Whats up with that? I mean with the MANY decks that are built purely around speed, why are people being stupid? I'm an oldschool player so maybe that's why, but I've always thought at least 15/20 creatures in which cmc is hierarchical. So what am I missing? I get it if it's a burn deck, or black control, other wise I'm just at a loss for words.

There are plenty of good reasons for a deck to look like that. Post an example, and it'll be easier to explain what's going on in that particular deck.

Are you talking about one format specifically, or across all formats?

Trollandtoad is very reliable and cheap.

Tamiyo's Lulla-bye is the latest one, and I get it but still playing against an aggro deck I don't feel like 4 Snapcaster Mage s are enough.

Note that deck also plays 8 Wraths (10 if you count Sleep ), so it has a pretty good defense against Aggro matches. Being able to buy all that time makes it fairly easy to get to the creatures that will actually win the game, Gideon Jura and Entreat the Angels .

Yea but they are all 4 cmc which gives the other person 4 turns to kill them, and I know plenty of decks that can kill in 4 turns if you can't block.

Not in standard.

I am experimenting with control to make myself a better player, but I am an agro player at heart. I have a well-tuned Krenko Goblin deck that can kill on turn 4 if your opening hand is exactly perfect, otherwise you're looking at turn 6 or more assuming you don't miss any land drops. Defensive decks like this can be insanely tough to beat.

It doesn't make sense for most people on first glance, but the amount of answers it - Tamiyo's Lulla-bye - has for pre-T4 action is considerably strong.

We're looking at Ponder s for library manipulation and setups (probably a T2/T3 Miracled Terminus ), Mana Leak s for early denial, Think Twice for cantrips, and Snapcaster Mage s, not only for chump blocking, but for recycling of early game cards that have been used, like Ponder and Mana Leak .

NDRue Thanx that actually makes since now, however I don't think I could ever play a deck with so few creatures.

See if a friend has a deck built this way that you can borrow or play against him/her. Playing a deck you're strategically unfamiliar with can teach you a lot.

I built myself a walker control deck around Gideon Jura and Garruk Relentless  Flip that taught me a lot about playing control and also helped me learn to tune decks that aren't creature based. It was the best thing I've done in a long time, and I'm hesitant to take it apart for new standard, despite the fact I need the Garruks and the Ajani out of there for other stuff.
