Am I missing something about Prophet of Kruphix?

Prophet of Kruphix looks underpriced and like it has legs for Modern and especially Commander. Does it just appeal to my style of play more so I overrate it or is the market not catching on yet?
I have a playset but I'm tempted to grab more while they're only $2 for speculation purposes...
It's fantastic in EDH, but it has limited use in Standard and very little if any in Modern. It's a real lightning rod, and for 5 mana you need something game-ending in Modern.

I think that it will rise. I love that card so much. I am not really one to play the market, but I think this one would be one I picked. I could see them going to 10 or 15. It all depends on the sets to come, and what colors are played.

I expect with the arrival of the G/U god, and more importantly rotation in October, simic decks could rise again. The card is great in EDH and casual play too so I think you're safe at or around the $2 mark to pick up a few. I wouldn't expect much in modern though. 5 drops that don't win the game are not played with any frequency in most decks.

Def not a modern possibility, but I was just thinking standard would drive it's price. Also at $2 you will not lose money on it. I do not see this being a dollar rare even after it rotates out down the road.

It's more of just a causal card, is't okay but it's too expensive and slow

Jp3ngu1nb0y: Heh heh, lightning rod. That's a little clever actually.

I play Prophet in most of my decks, but it is harder to play that just the current main decks to pilot. Most the time you tap out to play her and in a meta full of a tonne of removal Prophet is guaranteed to receive instant hate. and Yeah, Lightning strike is effectively kill Prophet of Kruphix dead in my meta. Come rotation she'll be a definite powerhouse (along with Polis Crusher and other cheap rares). In fact Kruphix, God of Horizons could really add to that, plus the Blue Red scry land for Irindu. The Irindu decks are already on the rim of being PT playable but the missing scry land actually hinders it a lot. I'm actually hoping Kruphix and Kranos synergise nicely to really complete the Irindu deck.
Simic in general is a deck based on synergy and that is incredibly hard to pull off in the current meta of mono black and U/W control. Not saying simic isn't possibly, I've dominated with Simic. Prophet in Commander is OP as shizz.
Also I have 16 copies of her.:)

TheDevicer - I regret getting rid of my playset of her. But stronger toughness maybe makes her stronger? Still, that's what I was thinking about when I asked. Lower toughness but universal flash is a good trade.

Also, Seedborn Muse untaps all permanents. Prophet of Kruphix does not.
April 3, 2014 12:45 p.m.
Seedborn Muse also untaps all permanents, which gives it interaction with artifacts as well.
April 3, 2014 12:45 p.m.
OK, so now I'm really regretting parting with my playset of Seedborn Muse s. And the rest of my collection, I guess...

Edh loves it, im not sure if y ou looked at the foil pricr
April 3, 2014 1:19 p.m.
I feel the same way about Fleecemane Lion . I think it will rise come rotation. They are $2 right now.
April 3, 2014 2:15 p.m.
I mean Chromatic Lantern was less than a dollar and now its $4 and will only go up unless they reprint it ($10 foil). But Prophet has very little chance of being reprinted due to its set uniqueness. and its $3 now and $12 Foil. So picking them up at least 2 playsets is probably a good investment. I think the Foil will drop to $10 but hey.

I may go up a bit from Standard just before and after rotation, depending on the support Blue and Green receive for creature decks with the upcoming sets. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see it banned in EDH. That card is so un-fun to play against. It's like Seedborn Muse + Yeva, Nature's Herald in one card. That interaction was the basis of my old Yeva EDH deck, and THAT was usually pretty stupid.

zandl - Yeah, I can see it on the kill list with EDH, flashing in creatures every other player's turn (hand and mana permitting)? Yikes.
Gotta get some games in with her before she's gone, then...

It's most broken with Roon of the Hidden Realm where you can use Roon during every turn of the game, leading to hugely annoying EoT stacks and a ton of time being spent.
I'd know; that's what my Roon deck does.
April 3, 2014 3:46 p.m.
Funny, that's what I'd like to make my Roon deck do, too.

That is what roon does for me. He is dumb. My roon deck is dumb. I should feel dumb.
April 3, 2014 4:33 p.m.
My Roon deck is dumb, it makes me feel dumb, it makes everyone in the game dumb, and it makes everyone watching dumb.
It's dumb.
April 3, 2014 4:35 p.m.
zandl i wouldnt see a ban coming though, especially since seedborn isnt. 2 colors makes it harder to cast, regardless of it being in the deck you want those colors anyway, it limits where it can be played, it doesn't untap artifacts, and has 1 less toughness taking it out of range for a lot of things.
I do however play Roon and love it in there, but theres such a big target on prophets head hes not as big of an issue in big games.
April 3, 2014 5:06 p.m.
But you can flash in creatures every single turn, not just on your own. Seedborn doesn't give Flash.
Also, once something's 5 mana or higher, the "harder to cast" argument doesn't really hold any water.

The price of the foil version- about $10- when compared to the regular price of $2 speaks to the fact that it's an EDH powerhouse.
That said, it is also very good in Standard. However, when it comes to price, how good a card is certainly plays a role, but it's really a factor of supply and demand (how appropriate that this is the Economics forum). Since the closest thing to a mainstream deck using Prophet is GU or RUG Monsters, and it's not really a card that you want 4 copies of, the demand side of the equation doesn't add up to a higher price. Simple as that; it's the same reason why the pre-rotation junk rare Nightveil Specter is pushing $10 even tho it's still a pretty mediocre card.

Oh btw Modern is out of the question, a 5-drop that dies to Lightning Bolt won't get the job done.
April 3, 2014 5:41 p.m.
ChrisHansonBiomancin - I wondered how much of its price was being driven by the current powerhouse decks. U/G doesn't really make much of an appearance in top decks as far as I can see so I can see that limiting it. I didn't realize Lightning Bolt was in Modern so, yeah, that's very dangerous.

bigpappyj - Thankfully bolt isn't but Lightning Strike is. Like I said, most the time you tap out to play Prophet but if you're smart you should be able to hold up protection. There is a tonne of one drop and 2 drop protection spells and if an opponent lets you keep Prophet of Kruphix you've effectively won the game. (unless you draw naught but land after that... believe me, it happens)

Admittedly, I'm newly returned to Magic after about a decade off so my familiarity with sets and strengths are a bit out dated...
