Awaken the Ancient (standard)

Deck Help forum

Awaken the Ancient seems like a very strong card in Standard. It dies to removal and can get two for oned like so many others, but it seems strong for Red Devotion decks, especially ones comfortable playing on 3-4 mana like red can easily do. Am I missing something about this 7/7 hasty brawler?

Dies to Doom Blade . Dies to Selesnya Charm . Dies to Cyclonic Rift . Turns every removal spell into Sinkhole , except better, because you also lost the enchantment. Just not good against any deck with instant speed removal, which is most of them.

Actually the problem is not really the dies to removal so much, most red lists are not going to mind loosing a land at a certain point. Getting 2 for 1 is never great but, on top of that the main strike against it is that it's actually a 5 drop, because if you tap the mountain then it can't attack, and there's better things you can be doing for 5 mana than a 7/7 on the ground.

A 7/7 on the ground for 5 that basically keeps one of your mana tapped down, that can also be Stone Rain ed by removal, all becomes pretty unappealing when compared to say Stormbreath Dragon .

As a cheap alternative to a mono red beater (As previously mentioned, Stormbreath Dragon ), It's fine. However, if you want to throw your land at your opponent, you should be using Hammer of Purphoros , since it gives an arena effect of Haste, and many 3/3s are harder to deal with than 1 7/7. The 3 devotion becomes hideously outweighed by the fact that it's so vulnerable.

Or you could always just pick your lands up and throw them at your opponent. I've seen people get some pretty nasty throws on a sleeved card.

If you want a better budget option, Rubblebelt Raiders seems like it could work, and it adds the same devotion.

He hurts in a limited or draft though... UNTIL YOU PLAY BANISHER PRIEST!
But seriously though, unlike Mutavault it's permanently a creature. and just from my own thoughts, I see red tap out a lot, it can be wasteful, but Hammer of Purphoros is a pretty cool guy, I won a matchup against a U/W control just by making golem after golem, theyre expendable in a way and they hurt, Can't counter those.. Azorius Charm you say? Detention Sphere ? I'll make more. hehehe.
