I want to create some sort of custom commander, but i have no idea what to do for it. Suggestions?

Try color shifting an existing commander. I've eyeballed color shifting Animar personally by taking its primary color (green) and replacing it with Black in this instance.

Decimar, Life of Aether

Pro White and Pro Green

Whenever a creature is put into your graveyard from anywhere, put a +1+1 counter on Decimar.

Non-creature spells you cast cost less for each counter on Decimar.

1/1

A smaller change I've considered is adding 1 color to a mono color legend. I.e. adding or to Odric, Lunarch Marshal in place of 1 colorless mana.

I think it's good to come up with some kind of concept first. Is there some kind of specific strategy you want the commander to specialize in? Like graveyard, combat, tribal, counters, spellslinger, etc. It helps if you choose something you're already familiar with. That way you can either make something totally new or combine abilities from older cards in new and exciting ways. Most new cards are just rehashed older cards, colorshifted, card-shifted (like a card that was a land now has it's ability on a creature), etc. You could combine the idea of Sen Triplets , Mycosynth Lattice , and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger to create some kind of Eldrazi commander that can annihilate, repurpose, and control the cards it has exiled similar by recasting them. Sounds a bit similar to what Emrakul did to Innistrad. Whatever you choose, choose the colors, mana cost, and power and toughness of your commander last. Or you could take some character you know well, in magic lore or not, and make a card for them. A great example of this are the new titan cards being spoiled for Theros. They're based off of the titans from myths as well as the old titan cards from M11 who have an ability that triggers on ETB and attacking ( Grave Titan and such). They took an ability from old cards and then added some more effects to show the titans dying initially and coming back from the grave like in the Percy Jackson books. Great design, honestly.

Maybe think of something you've always wanted to make an edh deck with but was never available. Or find a keyword you find interesting and try to make a commander that could abuse that keyword.
