Sunscorch Regent scares me..

What are y'alls thoughts on Sunscorch Regent in EDH? Here's my experience...
In a 4-player game last week, I had an opponent play a Sunscorch Regent and then pass the turn. No one paid it much mind because it's 4/3 without any protection. I mean c'mon - it dies to almost anything immediately. By the time it got to their turn again, it was a 10/9 and they played Archangel of Thune. Shit.
So it's now time for the removal spells. Archangel of Thune died and Sunscorch Regent got bounced back to their hand. Crisis averted for now but for the rest of the game that dragon kept coming back and dealt over 35 damage by the end.
It doesn't seem like much of a threat when you look at it so you're going to save your Path to Exile, Hinder, etc. for the serious stuff but it is serious stuff and I want one now lol.

I enjoy it, especially in decks that can effectively use the lifegain triggers through Archangel of Thune or Drogskol Reaver. It's a great way to attract removal so your other creatures can survive.

It's better in the more casual lists. The decks that are built at least for a somewhat competitive environment won't include the card for the reasons above in addition to the fact that every deck trying to win should have more than enough answers to threats. Also, infinite combos ignore the shit out of this, and that's one of the most - if not the most - common ways to win in EDH.

Rhystic Study is honestly a bigger threat than Sunscorch Regent. Same for Mystic Remora.

Well that's only natural. Card advantage is always going to be more important than a moderately big fatty.

I wouldn't be opposed to running one in a casual deck. It's not bad.

It plays nicely with Well of Lost Dreams. Together they act like a Mind's Eye that triggers on spells instead of card draw.

At 5 mana, it's not a huge investment, but it dies to most board wipes around (apart from some of the red ones). The thing is, it's just a beatstick. it's evasion is nice, but it takes time to get big and it doesn't accumulate card advantage or do anything quickly.

I've run it in casual 60-card free-for-all and done well, but EDH? In a format where you've got board-wipes and infinite combos flying left and right I've found it's a little underwhelming. There's surely better things to run in white.

It's solid, and it scales relatively well in multiplayer (three times as many lifegains and counters!). Red has a bit of trouble dealing with it.
That said, it has neither protection from colors, shroud, nor hexproof, so it can be killed by targeted removal; it doesn't have indestructible nor regeneration, so it can be killed by boardwipes; and it doesn't have trample, "can't be blocked", protection, or any real evasion besides flying (the most common creature keyword, plus there's also reach in the system), so there's no guarantee that all that power it's amassing even hits a player, ever. It also comes down turn five and has no immediate impact on the board.
Solid, but not great.
