FNM RESULTS 10/7/2016 —Oct. 8, 2016

Had a lot of fun playing the deck, and definitely got a feel for which cards performed well and which under-performed. Will make some tweaks soon, but for now let's move onto the results:

MATCH 1: 2-0-0 vs. ?

Opponent dropped out before the match started. Free win, but pretty lame since I wanted to test the deck.

MATCH 2: 0-2-0 vs. G/R Delirium

This deck is much more resilient than I expected it to be. Both game went about the same, with card:Worldbreaker putting in some serious work. The amount of recursions and access to creatures this deck has is scary. Best option to counter the deck is to include more exile / graveyard hate. I got relatively unlucky with a few draws, especially in the 2nd game, getting stuck on 4 lands for 3 turns kind of slowed my game down a bit. Not sure how popular this deck is, but will need to consider it when I make the tweaks.

MATCH 3: 2-0-0 vs. UG Energy

This was a pretty easy game. I was able to throw out my walkers both games and keep them there since my opponent didn't have any removal for them, and his creatures didn't stick around long. I really didn't get to see what the deck was really supposed to do, and I think this was very likely a jank brew that the player was trying out. On the flip side, winning with Liliana's emblem both games was fun.

MATCH 4: 2-1-0 vs. Bant Humans

No idea hat Bant Humans was still a deck post rotation. First game I kept a terrible hand, got cocky thinking my deck would be able to control the board and stabilize well enough, but I highly underestimated how explosive of a start the deck could have and it costed me the first game. The second and third game played out the same. Good to note that using Lost Legacy to strip my opponent of Tireless Tracker slowed him down a whole lot, since aside from Tamiyo they didn't have any card advantage.

FINAL RESULT: 3-1-0

I was happy to test the deck, and if anything I got to watch over some matches to get a feel of what decks I might encounter at my LGS. I wasn't really happy about the free win and the easy-mode match up against the UG Energy deck but oh well.

What about running Spell Shrivel instead of Negate? Only difference is that It would be one more mana but it could counter a lot more things and then have negates in sideboard for the control vs control matchup. And if so, what would you do to include 4 in the main because I feel like counters and Grasp of Darkness are a four of.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I don't like any of the current counters in standard, I think they are all bad; that said, if I was to run one of the 3 cmc counters I would run Void Shatter over Spell Shrivel. They are the same cmc, and they both exile as well, with the only difference being that Shrivel give the opponent a chance to play the spell. The reason I main boarded Negate is because it hits everything that my removal doesn't hit, more importantly it hits vehicles, planes walkers, and removal towards my own planes walkers. I MIGHT consider running something like Shatter in the main if Negate ends up being bad.

I am aware that obviously the other 3 cmc counters hit what Negate does and more, but there is such a big difference between a 2 cmc counter and a 3 cmc counter. I was spoiled by Modern I guess; man I miss Silumgar's Scorn when Esper Dragons was a thing. Ok, I am starting to go off on a tangent. In short, I am aware I am taking a risk by main boarding Negate, and will likely replace it if need be.

Anyways, to answer your question you could easily cut out Declaration in Stone to make room for the 4th counter, but I think I am going to be fine with 3. Depending on preference you could also cut both Anticipate, if you want to leave in Declaration, and just add the 4th counter and another Glimmer of Genius.

Negate is going to be amazing along with Ceremonious Rejection being one of the best for the top deck to beat in vehicles.

The_Riddlebox between Murder and Skywhaler's Shot, and Immolating Glare and Grasp of Darkness, which would you choose?
