Two ETB's on the stack vs. Humility

Asked by zigkid3 5 years ago

My opponent has Humility out on the field. I have Aura Shards.

Normally if I play Wood Elves I wouldn't get the ETB trigger because of Humility.

However, once Wood Elves enters the field. Can I choose to have Aura Shards trigger to get rid of Humility in order for Wood Elves to get the triggered ETB?

Or would that not work?

2nd question:

Opponent has an enchantment that says "if you have 50 or more life at the beginning of your upkeep you win the game". He is at 48 life, but he also gains 2 life at the beginning of the up keep. Can he choose to stack the effect so that he gains the 2 life first and then the other enchantment checks to see if he has 50 life to win? Or would that not work as well?

When your elf enters the field, Aura Shards will trigger. The creature's ability won't. You can blow up Humility but it won't cause Wood Elves's ability to trigger, because it will already be on the field by the time Humility is gone.

Yes your opponent can stack the triggers so that he gains life first, and then the enchantment checks. He will have to choose the enchantment to trigger first, then the life gain. The life gain ability will resolve first, then when the enchantment checks his life, he will be at 50 and win.

While Test of Endurance's rulings aren't clear, Felidar Sovereign has a ruling that leads me to believe that the lifegain trigger during the upkeep wouldn't work.

8/25/2015: Felidar Sovereign's triggered ability checks to see if you have 40 or more life as your upkeep begins. If you don't, the ability won't trigger at all. If you do, the ability will check again as it tries to resolve. If you don't have 40 or more life at that time, the ability won't do anything.

So at the start of your opponent's upkeep, Test of Endurance wouldn't see 50 life yet, so the ability wouldn't trigger at all, even though the lifegain trigger would subsequently bump him up to 50.

Both Felidar Soverign and Test of Endurance use an 'intervening if' clause. When the trigger condition is met (your upkeep starting), if the clause is met, it is put on the stack, if the clause is not met (having too little life), it is not put on the stack. When the ability resolves, it checks the clause again, if your life total is too low at this point, the ability will do nothing.

TL;DR - Test of Endurance requires you to have 50 life when your upkeep starts, you can't gain life in your upkeep to make it trigger.

Kogarashi is correct, you must have the life at the start of the Upkeep in order to win with Felidar Soverign or Test of Endurance. We had a judge settle this a few months back with an Oloro player.
