Ensoul Artifact and card types

Asked by Argy 8 years ago

If I Ensoul the following cards, do they continue to have the options listed?

Chief of the Foundry - +1/+1 other Artifact creatures
Ornithopter - Flying
Hangarback Walker - put Thopters out when it dies
Springleaf Drum - tap Creatures to add mana

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: ... also pretty much yes. Look at Darksteel Mutation's Oracle text for an example of an Aura that changes types and makes things lose abilities.

Ensoul Artifact does not modify the abilities of the enchanted artifact, it just turns it into an artifact creature. The abilities will still be there.

Note that in the case of Hangarback Walker, the Walker will usually be bigger than 5/5 (thanks to the +1/+1 counters), but when it dies you only get Thopters based on the number of counters it had, not based on its total power.

Little correction to Drilnoths answer: It only turns the enchanted artifact into a creature, not an enchantment creature. I can't think of any situation where this would be relevant, and I'm pretty sure if such a situation exists, it would involve Song of the Dryads... but just so it's clear that if Ensoul Artifact enchants something that stops being an artifact, it will "fall off" because it's enchanting an illegal object.

I never said it turns into an enchantment creature...
