Does this combo work

Asked by DarlinggnilraD 4 years ago

If I play Apex of Power while I have either Swarm Intelligence or Reverberate to copy it, will the "if Apex of power is cast from your hand" still apply on the copies. It is not very clear for me in the rules 706: Copying objects.

Most of the time copies of spells are not cast. The times that you make a copy and then cast the copy is always from an exiled card and the copy is therefore made in exile and cast from there. So a copy will never be "cast from" anywhere except exile.

As for whether or not the "cast from hand" part applies, each copy of the spell contains that rules text. When the copy resolves, it will check "if (this copy) was cast from your hand," find that the answer is "no" (because the copy effect doesn't cast it at all in this instance), and not give you the extra mana. Only the original, if cast from your hand, will give you ten mana.

Note that this is also covered in one of the rulings notes in the Gatherer entry for Apex of Power:

7/13/2018 If an effect copies Apex of Power, the copy wasn't cast at all, so you won't add ten mana.

The only time I can think that a copy would be cast from hand is with God-Eternal Kefnet who specifically copies a card in your hand (the one you drew) and allows you to cast it. As it doesn't circumvent mana cost entirely, it's not overly helpful with Apex of Power .
