POLL: Should Theros be Legal in this New Format (Named: Current) or No?

The Kitchen Table forum

The format is called Current. I have made a lengthy and detailed article on it a while back which will solve all your questions HERE.

TL;DR (of the article): Current is intended to follow the new border of M15 and any non-supplementary set afterwards.

However, should it follow that vigilantly? As many know, Theros is on the same power level as the Current standard and could really diversify the format. However not everyone will want this, so I just need to know what the majority follows.

So:

  • Say yes if you want Theros block to be in Current.
  • Say no if you don't want Theros block to be in Current.

since the format is based on the border change (such as modern was) then no. But this means that current is currently a slightly expanded version of standard. In a few more rotations the format will be better situated for being more diverse.

I mean it's a non-supported arbitrary format so who really cares? Let each kitchen table make their own rules.

Hopefully not for long! I would lik to play Current (even though I do play modern) just to have fun with the power differences.

@TurboFagoot: yes, but if Femme_Fatale wants it to ever become a sanctioned format, than its rules need to be set firm. House rules can and do override format rules since they are not used in sanctioned games. But even a casual format such as EDH (now also called commander) needed a base set of rules so if you played outside of your play group then you would know what to expect and could inquire just about any house rules that were in effect.

"but if Femme_Fatale wants it to ever become a sanctioned format,"

lol Good luck with that

If it the "format" is based off of going on the new border cards, then no, theros cards do not have the new border. That's like saying you want zendikar to be in current so you can some more fetches. Stick to your own rules.

I really don't understand why you would propose to create a format with new border-based rules and then throw that out the window so you can include something that interests you. You could use your logic to include any non-legal set.

Whenever I suggest this format, Epochalyptik, I constantly get people saying that Theros should be in it, hence a poll.

And when you outline basic rules for a format, you have to be prepared to defend them against suggestions that obviously fall outside of the format's purview. Good management is not necessarily a democratic process. It rarely is.

I'm going to go ahead and say no. The deciding factor was Thoughtseize.

Definitely "no"

My vote is "no".

Thoughtseize aside (because it would probably be a big deal), I agree with Epoch on this.

What do you think of adding supplemental sets in? Things like "From the Vaults: X" would be out, but things like commander products could be fun to play with. Though WCE is a thing.

As for the poll, no. I think the rules of the format should be followed.

Supplemental products? If it's to be official, no. Otherwise, interesting choice. I feel like the power level would be too high.

January 20, 2016 12:39 p.m.

If you're allowing supplemental sets, you're de facto violating the rules you votes to follow.

Femme_Fatale says... #18

Not allowing supplemental products.

I am however interested in how a "supplementary product only" set would work out. But that's another format for another time.

That's a format that I would play. No damn Emrakuls... Wait, is Modern Masters a supplemental product? Okay, I take it back.

Femme_Fatale says... #20

I don't think the Tron lands are in supplementary products.

Doesn't matter. People will find a way.

I'm a little confused what you mean by supplemental in this context. In general, can you explain what sets are allowed right now?

As for Theros, I think you should stick to your format's rules. No other formats have exceptions.

Btw, I like the idea of this format. Both Modern and Standard are getting kind of boring, Commander is well... weird... and all the other formats aren't very fun. Support from me :D

Femme_Fatale says... #23

Supplementary products are anything that is not released as a set that's a part of a block.

January 24, 2016 4:40 a.m.

CastleSiege says... #24

No.

The idea behind the format is that it only uses cards from sets with the new M15 border, like how Modern only uses cards from 8th Edition and onward. Exceptions to rules, more often than not, cause over complications and can make things feel less streamlined and more clunky.

People will have to be patient and wait for a few sets to roll around for the format to really pick up.
