What gets you excited for sets? :3

When a new set is being announced / spoiled / released, what is it that you look for that excites you?

My top 3 sets that have had me hyped were Khans, Ixalan and Forgotten Realms. The amount of stock I acquired of each is... sad wallet noises

What I love are interactive mechanics, big dumb creatures, and beautiful tribal color pairings - to absolutely no one's surprise.

So what makes you hyped, and why?

It depends on if it's a new plane or not. If it is, then the world design and flavor of it are the biggest things for me. It's part of the reason that Kaldheim is one of my favorite sets.

If it's a return set, then it depends on how they flesh out the world and the art and story. Powerful cards are fun and all, but legendary creatures or iconic parts of lore always get me excited. Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow are the most recent examples of this. This applies to supplementary sets as well, which is why Commander Legends is another of my favorite sets of all time. Crossover sets, though, don't interest me much.

My favorite sets of all time are Amonkhet/Hour of Devastation, Kaldheim, Commander Legends and War of the Spark.

Currently insanely hyped for Brothers War and (cautiously) hyped for Neon Dynasty.

Powerful cards for my existing commander decks and Legendary creatures with interesting mechanics get me excited for a set. I play primarily commander and I like to do powerful things.

Awesome discussion! Big thanks to the OP for starting it. If nothing else, it's super interesting to see what people think on the topic.

For me it's definitely art and setting first with big bonus points if the set has a good storyline going with it. I liked the storyline for the Weatherlight Saga when I was young and I really love some of the Ixalan stories from more recent years. For most sets I don't care for the overarching story and that really flattens my interest. Like, I might pick a card or two out of Strixhaven, but something like Forgotten Realms with it's rich history and the way they tied that into the shell of magic, that makes me want to build new decks.

My all time fave sets have been Forgotten Realms, Ixalan, Throne of Eld, Shadowmoor, and the original sets that could tell you so much with just a little flavor text. Least favorite would be the whole Gatewatch and everything around it. I really like planeswalkers as a type, but all of the original ones were so dull. Give me Huatli any day and keep the Jace and friends.

I'm also, definitely, cautiously, looking forward to neon dynasty like KBK7101 OG Kamigawa is also up there in my absolute faves.

  • I enjoy changing of the guard in regards to strategy (you can't GIVE something to other players & still be playing with power?), cards that scale well to multiple players, Machiavellian politics, cards that allow multiple crappy choices to other players, designs keeping the multiplayer aspect of the game in mind, punishers that have high upside to the casting player. Basically I like innovation in design space. Example: for Grismold, the Dreadsower

  • I'm excited for Streets of New Capenna as the "City of Angels" sounds like the foundation for a badass story as well as (hopefully) a whole lot Machiavellian politic cards.

  • I would like to see some of the color wedges not involving or getting innovative attention. I will be happy when Capenna explores some color combos that feel like they have been neglected for awhile. Like maybe getting something that isn't sacrifice-based.. Thus I hold out hope that Capenna may explore some of my favorite slices of the color pie in new ways.

Gleeock, did you see the Twitter post expressing how there are FIVE 3C crime syndicates vying for power - one lead by Ob Nixilis?

The speculation is that they will be Shards and being back the Triomes to finish the cycle, as Ikoria gave us the wedges.

So yeah, I'm excited. Definitely.

All I play is EDH and almost all of my decks are pretty optimized but seeing a new card that deserves a spot to at least be tested always gets me excited. This is especially true if it's something that could earn a spot in my Animar or Grixis Marchesa lists.

TypicalTimmy I did see that. That is part of what I am excited about with that set (exploring some less explored wedges)... Jund's "lands matters" theme fell kindof flat, probably the most exploratory concept I've seen in Jund in awhile was Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire. I am less of a tribal guy, I like sets based on new design space or surprise bangers. Being less of a tribal guy, several of the sets haven't had as much appeal for me lately because they have been pretty heavy on that emphasis.

I started playing with War of the Spark, so the lore is still new to me. I feel that is a reason that I really enjoyed Kaldheim because I didn’t feel like I was missing a huge chunk of background story. Also starting with Spark, I didn’t realize that every set wasn’t chalk full of Planeswalkers. This leads me to always be on the lookout for new or new iterations of planeswalkers in each set. Mostly though, it’s the art. I love the art on magic cards. That’s what he first thing I look for on each subsequent set.

For me it is new mechanics, I love when they introduce new ways to play the game. I love card interactions/synergy so getting to come up with combos and weird ways to break new cards is always fun. Art is also big for me as well. I enjoyed the Kaldheim showcase and the recent Innistrad B&W cards.

If there is a tribe i care about in a set it is a bonus.

For me, its the build around kind of cards, either in a new mechanic or an overpowered creature. Decent reprints is also something I get excited about.

For me, It's more of the anticipation of what will be in the set. Whenever a set comes out, Most of the cards will be draft fodder and not playable in constructed. I've recently gotten into Pauper and there is usually a few cards from each set that will see pauper play. There will also be cards that will see play in Commander, Pioneer, Legacy and Vintage, to an extent. It's like a box of Chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.

I know I'm late to the thread, but I get most excited for new planes. Mechanically, I like finding new interactions and synergies with abilities that hadn't even been guessed at. For the flavor, I love the feeling of getting to know a new plane, how it's society works, and all the little stories that don't necessarily tie into whatever the planeswalker crew is doing.
