Major sideboard update? —Dec. 22, 2016
I took a hard look at all the matches I've played with this deck (in both casual and tournament play), and sorted them in order of win percentage and the number of times I've played against them. My meta is very diverse, so there are a ton of one-ofs. But here are the match-ups I've played more than once, listed as Deck - Matches - Win %:
- Grixis Emerge - 4 - 100%
- RG Wolves - 4 - 100%
- BG Delirium - 3 - 67%
- Mardu Control - 5 - 60%
- BW Lifegain - 2 - 50%
- RG Marvel - 2 - 50%
- Jeskai Control - 5 - 40%
- UB Control - 3 - 33%
- UW Flash - 7 - 29%
- Esper Control - 2 - 0%
- Naya Superfriends - 2 - 0%
- RG Pummeler - 3 - 0%
When I actually looked at the data, I was surprised at how ineffective my sideboard is against most Control builds. And I'm obviously doing something wrong against the Mirror.
TL;DR: The counterspells I've been running have been responsible for some spectacular and quite memorable plays, but they've not been responsible for many wins.
I don't want to weaken the deck too much against my (currently) strong match-ups of course, but I'm convinced the deck needs a complete sideboard rework. Though I will miss the Temur sideboard tremendously, I am currently considering ...
- 3x Appetite for the Unnatural: Though I have a 50% win percentage vs RG Marvel, I have a 0% win percentage against UG Marvel, UR Summonings, and UR Reservoir. Natural State just isn't enough. Plus Appetite can kill Gearhulks.
- 1x Bristling Hydra (Hydra #4) vs. Control.
- 2x Chandra, Torch of Defiance vs. Control.
- 2x Devour in Flames vs. Planeswalkers.
- 2x Incendiary Flow vs. Graveyard decks.
- 2x Radiant Flames vs. Weenies.
- 3x Weaver of Lightning: Especially for UW Flash.
I'll most likely go +1 Mountain in the main board too, to cover the higher CMC of the sideboard cards and help make sure I have for Chandra.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions on these cards vs. the current sideboard!
