Playtesting and Reoptimizing —June 4, 2014

I've been absent from updates on all of my decks for quite some time. Nearly a month of silence later, I've come back with a few updates to the deck.

I had previously removed a single Child of Night and Soulmender, but after several rounds with 3 each of these creatures in the deck, I noticed that they didn't come up often enough, despite the total size of the deck also decreasing.

This change happened a while ago, and I can't remember what I ended taking out to reduce the size back down. Although I believe it involved taking the number of Trading Posts and Angelic Accords down to 3.

Another thing I had been wanting out of this deck is a higher recurrence of the Bubbling Cauldron + Festering Newt combo, I've added another Cauldron into the deck to aid in it's draw odds, and this should help the frequency of this tactic.

Now, onto the additions.

The first of the two additions is Isolated Chapel, which should help with having the ability to get mana into my pool quicker. The Guildgates are nice for the flexibility in color, but entering tapped causes a really unfortunate delay in my ability to gain health, which, with the lack of any large creatures, or consistent removal, is the strength of this deck, and the easiest way to win. Isolated Chapel, so long as I draw a basic land in my first hand, is a good addition to the deck, and the flexibility and speed of the card makes it worth the actual cost of the card.

The second addition is actually a new synergy to the deck. Play any card in synergy with Sanguine Bond then tap and sacrifice your Tainted Sigil. For what is essentially 2x the damage that would've been done.

Frayace, I'm using Congregate as opposed to Alive / Well mainly because Congregate is playable at instant speed. If I get into a tight spot and I need to gain life quickly, Congregate has the potential to keep me in the game. whereas Alive / Well can't do much on my opponent's turn.
