Chavest Misc Color Rare Finalists

#Black Rares
## Bog Packleader
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
We definitely think that the All black creatures clause should go.
## Chavest's Spirit
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
Strong feeling that this should be a 1/1 creature instead of an enchantment.
## Deception
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
Some concerns that exile was a whitish ability - perhaps make it a forced sacrfice?
## Imp Keeper Demon
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
Thought it was a nice solid creature, but concerns that demons need drawbacks of some sort?
*** #Red Rares
##Cult of the Phoenix
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
Some power concerns about a reusable Fling - maybe once a turn or activation costs more ?
##Gaazad, Blood Chieftain
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
No concerns with this one - we want to see how you people feel.
##Magma-Born Demon
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
We liked this card alot, but in squire1 's case i think he just wanted to beef up his Crucible of Worlds deck.
##Volcanic Priest
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
Clerics rule! no other comments.
*** #White/Black/Red Rares
##Angel of woe
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
We assumed it was type angel, and would probably reduce the P/T to 3/3. A nice simple solid creature.
##Avatar of War
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
We thought this one looked fun.
##Brutal Erasure
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
No concerns with this one.
##Neverdeath Phoenix
###Concerns and suggestions by the design team
We liked this recursion mechanic, maybe reduce the CMC ?
###Information about Chavest. Chavest is scrublands that lead to a treacherous volcanic range. The general tone for the shard is nihilistic and dark. Chavest is a land united under an iron rule, after a series of bitter conflicts and adjustments. ####Main Creature Types 1) demons - bound to Chavest by an unknown being Demons are generally humanoid but with massively muscular bodies, twisted, horned faces, clawed limbs, and in many cases leathery wings, demons embody the suffering and evil desires of ordinary races.
2) angels - also bound to Chavest by an unknown being, Angels have an extremely strong sense of justice and often devote their lives - and their deaths - to its cause, whatever it may be.
3) humans - Tough minded, hearty and adaptable.
4) imps - imps are barely-sentient, feral pests.
5) viashino - The Viashino are intelligent humanoids with lean, muscular builds. These Lizard-Folk are descended from dragons. Quick, agile, and vicious when required.
6) pheonix - rare and special, the pheonix embodies the driving force of the current, all encompassing Chavest faith, Redemption through destruction. ####Note : We are allowing creatures to be Angels and Demons at the same time. Subtypes include: knight, cleric, judge, barbarian/berserker, rogue. ####Themes/Mechanics Cleave X (whenever this creature deals combat damage to a blocking creature it deals X damage to that creatures controller.)
The mechanics of course include the evergreen keywords (deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance). ####To Recap : Main Types : demons, angels, humans, imps, viashino, phoenix. Subtypes : knight, cleric, judge, barbarian/berserker, rogue. General themes are land destruction, sweepers, burn, creature removal, Life Gain/Drain, anti-land, and sacrifice.

Bog Packleader -- of course I'm voting for this one . . . how about just all black creatures you control get +1/+1, plus the imp-bomb triggered ability -- sort of like a black-flavored Grand Architect .

I love Avatar of War. I want this card in print and I want it in my EDH deck.

I'm sorta meh on all the red cards. Gazaad seems a little OP, as there will be ways to cheat him out -- i'd be more comfortable if it was 2 lands, or 3 non-basics, or 3 basics, or something.

As is, I think I'm voting for Magma-born Demon. Chavest seems like the perfect place for a card that cares about how many lands are in your graveyard. I like the creature-only restriction. Have mono-red demons been done before?

Speaking of which, Chavest seems like a place where rare lands wouldn't be out of place.

May 18, 2011 6:39 p.m.

Chavest's Spirit - The 1/1 creature wouldnt be a bad idea. lol just a favorite.

Volcanic Priest - Maybe make it a 0/2.

and Neverdeath Phoenix - Drop the CMC by 2, making it 2WBR

Here are my votes:

Black: Bog Packleader. It can be hard to vote on tribal cards simply because we don't know what commons will be in the set. With that said, if there is a prevalent Imp theme this will be a cool card. The possible problems I see with it are 1. That it means you will have to have an imp focus (if this is not something you'd like to do my vote goes to Chavest's Spirit), 2. Yes, the black creatures clause should go, and 3. that the last ability bleeds into red's color pie. On that note I like this better as BR or maybe with the last ability requiring you to sacrifice an imp as a restriction.

Red: Magma-Born Demon. It my card. I, however, feel like it fits Chavest's flavor and would be a cool card to open in a pack. @landlot: it originally was BR, but I guess I misunderstood the challenge and it had to be mono-colored. I don't think a red Demon is too out of line though.

Multi: Neverdeath Phoenix. I liked it's ability, my only reservation is that there is already a tri-colored Phoenix mythic and having multiple rare Phoenixes might not be a great idea and could take away the excitement of the other one. On a side note, I enjoyed Brutal Erasure, but just felt like it's cost and ability were a little lackluster together.

Black: Imp-Keeper Demon

It's a simple creature and looks cool. I can imagine R&D printing this.

Red: Magma-Born Demon

All the red rares were less than spectacular, in my opinion. Two of them (Blood Chieftain and Volcanic Priest) are OP. Magma-Born Demon is pretty cool though.

Multi: Neverdeath Phoenix. I was inspired by the white rares of Chavest (Dispensable Guard, anyone) and that led to the birth of this card. I feel that it's a bit Golgari in flavor (it slowly rots away) but it fits in a phoenix domain too.

I feel like the CMC should be 3WBR if you guys want to lower it.

Black: Imp Keeper Demon. Suggestions: Maybe remove flying and add "At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice a creature."

Red: Cult of the Pheonix. Suggestions: Change activation cost to RR, add either "Activate this ability only as a sorcery" or "Activate this ability only once per turn."

Gold: Neverdeath Pheonix. Suggestions: Drop the price to 2WBR, cut the demon type, and change text to "When Neverdeath Pheonix is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, search your library for a card named Neverdeath Pheonix and put it onto the battlefield tapped with X -1/-1 counters on it, where X is the number of cards named Neverdeath Pheonix in your graveyard."

May 18, 2011 8:20 p.m.

dude1818 says... #7

One other option for Neverdeath Pheonix: make it two separate abilities, i.e.

"When Neverdeath Pheonix is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, search your library for a card named Neverdeath Pheonix and put it onto the battlefield tapped.

"Neverdeath Pheonix enters the battlefield with X -1/-1 counters on it, where X is the number of cards named Neverdeath Pheonix in your graveyard."

If Impkeeper Demon wins in black, one option to avoid the demon issue would be to simply make it a human and change it's name to just Imp Keeper. because I agree with the "Demons need drawbacks sentiment", but feel like adding a drawback would change the card pretty dramatically.

May 18, 2011 10:55 p.m.

dude1818 says... #9

While that's true, making it a human should also rob it of flying, make it around a 2/2, and reduce the cost. Either way, a large change would be needed.

May 19, 2011 12:23 a.m.

Smuggy says... #10

Some humans could reach 4/4 levels, an ogre might be a better choice, but you're right, I forgot about flying. Huh, you could have a black angel, but that might be even more flavor-breaking, even in chavest.

Deception - Dial down the power. The forced sacrifice is a good idea. For the second ability, limit the search areas (graveyard and library, I reckon) and/or drop it to only one card exiled.

Magma-Born Demon - Yeah, this is awesome. Make the damage dealing a forced thing, rather than "you may".

Avatar of War - Yes, lots of fun. I'd bring the cost up by 1, and tinker with it's power and toughness (6/3 seems more "war-like" to me)

Imp Keeper Demon changes:

Put FIVE 1/1 black imps with flying onto the battlefield.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control more creatures than an opponent, sacrifice all imps you control.

Black: Imp Keeper Demon

Increase number of imps to 3 on etb effect.

Add at the beginning of your upkeep you may sacrifice an imp. If you don't, lose 2 life.

Red: Volcanic Priest

I'd keep the card as is.Pinger with land destruction strapped on :)

Multi: Brutal Erasure

Again I really like this card as is,some solid spot removal goes down well, but I agree that the power level makes this a sorcery. Great card whoever designed this.

May 19, 2011 noon

Yeah, I have to say I'm an enchantment freak.

Pick 1 (Black): Spirit of Chavest

Pick 2 (Red) Cult of the Phoenix.

Although It seems a bit abusable with Eldrazi Monument /Awakening Zone decks, but hey, it's actually pretty legit if it was once a turn.

Pick 3 (Multi): Brutal Erasure all the way. Love the feel of it, and it seems fun and un-abusable in standard.

Chavest Spirit for Black, a creature seems much more interesting, but the BB mana cost seems very odd in a tricolor block, especially since it refers to a wedge that doesn't have black as the main component.

Cult of the Phoenix for Red, an incredibly solid card.

Avatar of War for multicolor- I was the one who designed it, so I feel a bit guilty voting for it, but I like it the most out of the options. Its simple, flavorful and interesting.

May 21, 2011 12:25 a.m.

Siegfried says... #17

For a fix to Cult of the Phoenix, might I suggest it only dealing 1 damage per activation? Still retains that nice "people throwing themselves into a fire" imagery. Also change the source of the damage to Cult, rather than the sacrificed creature.

May 21, 2011 12:30 a.m.

Black: Chavest's Spirit. I agree it should be a creature, but the idea makes for an interesting sac outlet that would lead to some fun recursion decks. Possibly make it more expensive by 1, but I'm not sure it's necessary.

Red: Gaazad, Blood Chieftain. It seems like a throwback to cards like Avatar of Woe , and it would be a great addition to many red decks in my opinion.

Multicoloured: Brutal Erasure. It seems like a powerful and flexible piece of removal, on par with Maelstrom Pulse . I like it a lot.

Voting for Imp Keeper Demon-drawback should be" During your upkeep if you control no Imps Lose 3 life and tap Imp Keeper Demon."

Gaazad, Blood Chieftain gets second vote.No changes needed.

Angel of Woe gets third vote.I agree with design team's change.

My votes go for:

Chavest's Spirit- Seems balanced, love the way it seems it would play.

Gaazad, Blood Chieftain- I'm a huge fan of land destruction. Rock on, Gaazad.

Brutal Erasure- Also a big fan of removal. This one seems both costly and effective for what it is.

Black - Bog Packleader, minus the all black creatures clause like y'all suggest. That doesn't fit the card in particular or Black in general.

Red - Magma-Born Demon. You've probably guessed from my entries but I love cards that turn your opponent's tactics into liabilities for them.

Multi - Avatar of War. I like mass effects like this and I think it fits perfectly with Chavest's "everything is fight" feel. Perhaps either a cost-reduction mechanic like the Prophecy "Avatar of X" cycle, or an activated ability that benefits from mass combat (deal damage to each attacker/each blocker, something with X where X is the number of attackers/blockers/creatures killed this turn)? Not really needed, though, he's pretty cool as-is.

Other notes -

Chavest's Spirit should definitely either be a creature or have a clause that tells the player to sacrifice it when they control no creatures.

I like Deception in a vacuum, but I don't know that it fits the feel of Chavest.

Cult of the Phoenix definitely needs to have a greater limiter on it. Fling costs two; because this is repeatable, perhaps make this ability cost "RRR, Sac a creature"? Or have the enchantment tap to activate. (Enchantments tapping isn't common but isn't against the rules, either.)

Gaazad, Blood Chieftan seems a little powerful to me. 6 mana to get a hasty 6/3 and destroy 3 lands seems...really strong. Then again so do the titans for the same cost. I dunno. Maybe if the cost-reduction clause had a specific number? "If you control at least 2 less lands than an opponent..."

Neverdeath Phoenix has a really interesting recursion mechanic.

May 23, 2011 12:44 p.m.

I vote angel of woe - i think p/t might be fine considering that the cost requires 3 different colors of mana. Not easily achieved unless we have some serious mana fixing in this set and even then not so easy to achieve.

Second Vote Volcanic Priest - could be fun

Bog Packleader - i agree that it needs to be changed i second the first posters changes.

How about if the card instead read all black creatures get +1/+1 and then if an imp leaves the field do 2 dmg to target player? We are talking about a multi color set, so it is likely that other players will have black creatures, and then the imp bonus is likely only to be used by the player who's deck this is in (excluding mirror matches of course) So i think this balances the card out a little bit better.

Chavest's Spirit:

because it seems like a fun card to build around but I'd change the shroud to indestructible. Oddly enough indestructible is easier to deal with with bounce or exile where shroud is hard to deal with since there is not a lot of good mass enchantment removal. Making it a creature would be ok but at the same time they tend to be easy to deal with. Maybe make it a 0/3 with shroud would give it some chance as a Pyroclasm couldn't kill it but it would also give you an out if you didn't want to sac your creatures which I think is bad since it is Black which should have some risk involved.

Volcanic Priest:

because it's strait up amazing.

Brutal Erasure:

because the control player in me likes it. Wrath effects are fun.
