What does Riptide Replicator summon when caged by Mairsil, the Pretender

Asked by Ansem717 7 years ago

Mairsil can exile the Riptide Replicator from my hand or graveyard when he enters. It then gets a cage counter and he copies its activated ability, but not the triggered ability to declare a color and type, nor any Charge Counters.

Assuming I can give him Charge Counters from other sources, and I activate his Riptide Replicator ability, what is the color and type of the token?

A colorless typeless creature (similiar to morph creatures) with power and toughness equal to the charge counters on Mairsil, the Pretender, so probably a 0/0. Also, Riptide Replicator doesn't have any triggered abilities, it's first two abilities are static abilities which are replacement effects modifying how it enters the battlefield.

Because there's no chosen color or type, the token won't have either of those qualities. If you're somehow able to get charge counters onto Mairsil (I can't think of a way to do this right now, but Magic is big and weird enough that it might be possible) then the ability will use that information for the token's P/T.

You could put charge counters on Mairsil, the Pretender with Mycosynth Lattice and Coretapper.

Or by Fate Transfering from a Lightning Reaver. There are many ways because Magic is a complex game of silly interactions.

For reference, you could do this with Mairsil and only one additional card if you cage that card and activate its ability, such as Brain in a Jar or Lux Cannon. If you have to do it all on the same turn, Gemstone Array delivers without tapping it. It looks like Mairsil is actually pretty great to build around charge counters, seeing as there are quite a number of options.

It's easy to put a charge counter on Mairsil. Mairsil can just exile an artifact with a Charge Counter activated ability.
