Tunnel Vision and naming a card

Asked by mmdw34 11 years ago

So I saw tunnel vision, when playing this card do you have to know the name of a card in your opponents deck? or can you name any card and just mill their whole deck out, I know it sounds like a weird question but I just want to make sure I understand the ability before I consider using it

From the Gatherer Rulings on Tunnel Vision :

10/1/2005 If the named card is found, everything from the top of the library down to the named card is put into the graveyard and the library isn't shuffled. If the named card isn't in the library, no cards are put into the graveyard and the library is shuffled.

But does the named card have to be something that can be found in their library? or say their playing mono blue and I name grave titan is that legal? or would that not be legal because im not naming a valid target card

It is completely legal to name Grave Titan ... the only thing is that it will just allow them to shuffle their deck because it was not found as Kirtanian pointed out. Nothing will go into the graveyard.

I don't see why it wouldn't be legal.

You can name any card but if it is a card that is not in their deck then nothing happens. If the card isn't found then the entirety of their library is shuffled and becomes their library again. That is what the above ruling states. The only use for naming something you are certain isn't in their library would be to get a look at their deck since it won't really have any other effect.

What are you thinking about using it for?

Okay I got it, so when the card is found thats when it triggers throwing cards into the graveyard gotcha. Im trying to make my first EDH deck and it would put a dent in the deck for sure if that came out and got a card thats 1 in 99

It is legal to name any card, but seeing as you probably wouldn't see that card in the deck, all the cards revealed would be shuffled back into the deck. You would be able to see each card in his/her deck, however no cards would be milled.

The best use of this would then be to play like a terminus-type effect where they would tuck a creature (best one being the commander) and then naming that creature; effectively, you would mill them completely out, barring any Eldrazi/Blightsteel Colossus type effects.

That's true, it could put a dent in the deck. What kind of EDH are you trying to build that would utilize this? Gravepower? Mill?

Then you definitely need to consider Spell Crumple , Hinder , Proteus Staff , Reito Lantern , Spin into Myth , or Vessel of Endless Rest to help enable it. Of course, only a few of those are actually useful outside of the Tunnel Vision combo.

Well the best set up for that would be tunnel vision+jesters cap+junktroller. See jesters cap can give you the ability to see whats in the opponents deck and junktroller allows you to put the card your going to call with tunnel vision on the bottom of there library its a game winner
