Question about using scavenge on creatures with */*

Asked by Juddnasty 12 years ago

I think I am right, but in my deck [[Play With The Dead] I am using like Varolz, the Scar-Striped to scavenge all my creatures when my general is not using them. But I have a number of / creatures like Lord of Extinction and Terravore . If I were to scavenge them, am I correct in assuming that the effect still counts when they are in the graveyard? If I have one like that and say...6 other creatures in the GY, I can scavenge for +7/+7?

Yes you are right. Power/toughness setting abilities like the ones on Lord of Extinction or Tarmogoyf work in all zones, whereas abilities just modify them (for example Wight of Precinct Six ) don't.

Yes, that is correct. Power and toughness abilities do work in all zones as already stated.

Emzed so side question. If I scavenge Ghoultree does his reducing the cost price with creatures in the graveyard also reduce the scavenging cost? or is that the modify ability thing you were talking about?

Something needs to be clarified here.

Technically, Emzed and Default404 are both incorrect because their answers are too vague. The only P/T-changing abilities that work in all zones are characteristic-defining abilities, which use asterisks to denote P/T. Other abilities, such as that of Wight of Precinct Six , don't function outside of the battlefield. Therefore, only CDAs will influence scavenge.

P/T-setting abilities are those like Darksteel Mutation or Godhead of Awe . CDAs and P/T-setting effects are differentiated in the layer guide, and they are applied in different sublayers.

Ghoultree 's cost reduction ability will not apply to scavenge costs from Varolz, the Scar-Striped . Scavenge is an activated ability. You aren't casting anything, and Ghoultree 's ability doesn't change Ghoultree 's mana cost. A card's mana cost is only the symbols printed in its upper right corner.
