Protection From Spells

Asked by vila_a23 13 years ago

Ok so here is the situation. I have played a Emrakul, the Aeons TornMTG Card: Emrakul, the Aeons Torn which has prot. from colored spells, cant be countered, and you take an additional turn after the turn he is summoned. I take my second turn and attack my opponent. Before I declare attackers he uses his Gideon's LawkeeperMTG Card: Gideon's Lawkeeper to tap my Emrakul. My question is if the ability trigered by Lawkeeper counts as a spell and would trigger Emrakul's ability that he cannot be the target of colored spells.

Gideon's LawkeeperMTG Card: Gideon's Lawkeeper has an activated ability, not a triggered ability. Its ability does not count as a spell.

Spells and abilities are not the same thing. In this case, activated and triggered abilities may still target Emrakul, the Aeons TornMTG Card: Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. This is similar to how Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring can exile Emrakul.

Isn't Oblivion Ring a colored spell? so Emrakul would have protection from it, thus rendering oblivion ring usless right? I know cards like Day of Judgement can get rid of him because they do not target him specifically, but Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring does target a creature?

Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring is a colored spell while it is on the stack, but it doesn't target anything while it is on the stack. When it enters the battlefield as a permanent, its ETB ability triggers. Since the ability is targeted and not the spell, it can exile Emrakul.

Spells are "cast". You do not cast an ability. So, any ability can hit Emrakul, whether that be a lawkeeper, Cunning SparkmageMTG Card: Cunning Sparkmage+Basilisk CollarMTG Card: Basilisk Collar, Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring or even Beguiler of WillsMTG Card: Beguiler of Wills

Sun TitanMTG Card: Sun Titan entering the battlefield and returninng a PacifismMTG Card: Pacifism into play attached to Emrakul (because it wasn't "cast", it was put into play), sacrifice of any sort, global board wipes like Day of JudgmentMTG Card: Day of Judgment all work too

Check the rulings at Gatherer before posting questions because it usually has the answers.

I swear! It will prevent leet-pros from doing this:

The Q&A section gives the TappedOut leet-pros purpose.

LET THEM ASK QUESTIONS OR THEY WILL CEASE TO EXIST!
