Preveting Damage from Worldfire?

Asked by Kakela 12 years ago

If I cast, say, Safe Passage when my opponent casts worldfire, would it preserve my life total? If not, are there any cards that can negate its effects, but only to one side? As in preventing loss of some of my creatures or life? If i cast Ghostly Flicker and exile two I have on the field and bring them in, would it be a trump card?

What would happen if I used Tainted Sigil 's ability in response?

Using things like Oblivion Ring on your own stuff its great with Worldfire

Worldfire doesn't deal damage to you, it causes loss of life. If you use Tainted Sigil after Worldfire resolves, you will gain all the life lost that turn.

Also it doesn't do damage, it just changes life totals. Therefore you can't prevent it.

@Skyfolk After it resolves, I wouldn't have the Sigil >_> also, if it says this turn, wouldn't effects that occur after it resolves still gain health for it? As long as it happens the turn i activate it, right?

Jp3ngu1nb0y, I'm going to steal that Oblivion ring idea...

If you activate the sigil in response, it will resolve first.

Kakela Tainted Sigil checks the life loss up to the point you use it. It does not account for the loss of life after Worldfire resolves. You can sneak around it with Oblivion Ring . Let Oblivion Ring exile your Tainted Sigil and after Worldfire gets rid of your Oblivion Ring , your Tainted Sigil will come back.

Worldfire does not deal damage, so you can't prevent it with Safe Passage . Ghostly Flicker doesn't change the fact that your permanents will be on the battlefield when Worldfire resolves. Slow flicker effects, like AEtherling and Ghostway , return your creatures to play at end of turn, so they would be exiled when Worldfire goes off. Suspend cards like Rift Bolt are also already removed from the game and will be cast during your upkeep as usual.
Using Tainted Sigil 's ability in response doesn't work, because the ability will resolve before Worldfire does (stuff on the top of stack resolves first). If you could somehow make Worldfire an instant (say Hypersonic Dragon ) you could activate Tainted Sigil 's ability and in response cast Worldfire , which would probably win you the game :)

And yeah, a bunch of response popped up while I was writing that. Nice

hubatish would AEtherling and things from Ghostway still be hit by Worldfire ? When they get exiled, they have a delayed trigger, so they wouldn't be on the field at the time Worldfire goes off.

Now cards like Cloud Shift would not save your permanents.

i thought the stapement " your total life becomes" fell in a different cathegory than damage and life loss, like Biorhythm style ......

If an effect sets a player's life total to a specific value, the player gains or loses enough life to get to that value. If some other effect is preventing the player's life total from moving in that particular direction (Leyline of Punishment , Platinum Emperion , etc.), then nothing happens.
