How does Sentinel Totem interact with Lazav, the Multifarious

Asked by Argy 5 years ago

Let's say my Opponent has ten mana available.

They pay X where X equals 5, for Lazav, the Multifarious to become a copy of Doom Whisperer in their Graveyward.

In response I tap and Exile Sentinel Totem.

  1. My guess is that they can pay a further 5 to choose Doom Whisperer again, and that trigger goes on the stack on top of my Sentinel Totem trigger?

    Similar question.

My Opponent casts Assassin's Trophy, targetting Doom Whisperer in their Graveyard.

In response I tap and Exile Sentinel Totem.

  2. Can they choose a different target for Assassin's Trophy, to go on the stack on top of my Sentinel Totem trigger?

  3. If they cast a second Assassin's Trophy will THAT go on top of the stack?

  1. Yes, if they have the mana they can reactivate in response. And would go on stack and resolve first.

  2. 3 issues. Assassin's trophy can't target anything in a graveyard (as they are not permanents unless in play), and assassin's trophy also can't target it's controllers things either as it specifies opponent's permanent. You can't change a target of a spell/ability is on the stack without having a spell/ability Like Redirect.

  3. Yes, as an instant they can respond with assassin's trophy whenever they get priority to cast spells and it goes on the stack. But same rules apply, it must target a permanent card in play and can't be one they control. They cannot however use assassin's trophy to stop the totem's ability, as abilities are independent of the source that created them, and the totem exiles itself as part of the cost to use the totem - so the totem will no longer be in play when opponent gets priority to cast spells.

Sorry pskinn01 I meant Find / Finality, not Assassin's Trophy

Can the spell caster choose new targets, thereby moving that spell to the top of the stack?

No once targets are chosen, only a spell/ability that allows you to change can change targets. And changing targets, won't change position on the stack of original spell

And with Find / Finality, it's a sorcery, so they couldn't cast a second one in response to your Sentinel Totem without a different effect that gives their sorceries flash (Hypersonic Dragon, for instance).
