Helm of the Host with Emblems?

Asked by DiceMaster3 5 years ago

I'm working on a deck with all the Gideon Planeswalkers, and all of them have an ability into a creature. So with the Gideon of the Trials emblem out, can I equip Helm of the Host to another one of the Gideon Planeswalkers like Gideon Jura or Gideon, Ally of Zendikar or Gideon, Champion of Justice or Gideon, Martial Paragon while one of them are a creature?

This is a bit of a weird situation. What ends up happening is:

You transform your transformed your Gideon of the Trials into a creature and equip Helm of the Host. At the beginning of combat, you create a copy of Gideon of the Trials - but this copy will be a planeswalker, not a creature. The transformation effect from Gideon of the Trials' first +0 ability is not copied.

This will not be a "Legendary Planeswalker - Gideon", it will just be a "Planeswalker - Gideon". As such, you can have multiple versions of the same Gideon in play.

The short answer is that yes, you can turn one of the Gideons into a creature, equip it with Helm of the Host, and then at the beginning of combat you will create a non-legendary token copy. The copy will be a planeswalker, not a creature. Because it's not legendary, it doesn't invoke the "Legend rule" and thus you won't lose either the token or the original.

The only effect the emblem of Gideon of the Trials will have in connection to this is that the token copies still count as Gideon planeswalkers for the purpose of the emblem's effect.

Also the Helm will "fall off" as soon as Gideon stops being a creature at the end of your turn. You'll have to re-equip it each turn.
