flip walkers and exile at end step type effects

Asked by veritas723 7 years ago

say for example I use Corpse Dance or a Dawn of the Dead type of card on a flip walker. and have the required condition to flip the flip walker....

A. does it flip? (having a hard time finding one, but some of these cards also say something like. if it would leave the battlefield for any reason exile it instead.... like say Whip of Erebos) or. i suppose. if it flips would it come back. --is the flip/transform considered leaving the battlefield?

and B. if it comes back transformed, does it remain after my endstep. seeing as it's a PW now and not a creature?

thanks to any who respond

A. If you have the conditions met to flip the planeswalker, say Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip, then it will indeed flip. In this case, even if you used Whip of Erebos, the card is already going to exile per effect of the flipping process. the Whip doesn't make it go into exile from exile, so that is irrelevant. When it flips, it will come back, and yes, the card left the battlefield in order to flip.

B. Yes. Once a card changes zones, it becomes a new entity with no knowledge of past existences. This means that the DTA given to it by Corpse Dance no longer exists, allowing you to keep the planeswalker through the end step like normal. Note that the fact that the creature turned into a planeswalker has no bearing on if the planeswalker stays or not, it's merely whether the card changed zones.

I'm a bit confused. I just read the transform ruling http://mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Transform

And I found this:"Transforming a permanent doesn't affect any Auras or Equipment attached to that permanent. Similarly, any counters on the permanent will remain on that permanent after it transforms.

Damage marked on a double-faced permanent will stay marked on that permanent after it transforms."

If counters, auras, equipments, damage marker, stays on it means to me it is the same permanent as before, so a delayed exile effect shoul'd still remain.

That's true for transform cards like Westvale Abbey  Flip who dont leave the battlefield during the transformation process.

However, because Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip exiles himself to transform, this rule doesn't apply.

It's the same concept as "flickering" a creature via Displace. A Pacifism on said creature won't be returned with the creature when it flickers.
